Chapter Seventeen

The rest of the day was quiet as I had nothing to do and nowhere to go. While Ben had been generous with the credit card so I could at least eat if I had to, I had no desire to run the balance up any more than it needed to be.

Dinner was simple that night. I wasn’t that hungry and not that sociable either.

I leaned my head back against the cushions of the couch and closed my eyes, hoping for a late afternoon nap and perhaps for time to pass. I really should have been going through that old paperwork that was sitting on the table but I couldn’t raise the energy to do it.

It was one thing to be refused service but the teens throwing eggs at me had rattled me in a way I hadn’t been rattled since I first moved to Toronto and made the mistake of looking out of place and had my wallet stolen out of my purse.

It was extreme—more than what I remembered my home town ever being before. I wasn’t a stranger, even if I had left for a while. My mother was at least somewhat well known in the local business associations and perhaps even around city council.

It’s almost like someone is stirring the pot, I thought and I sat up. But... why... wait...

The killer—the real one—would certainly have a motive. The more the spotlight was on me the less it would be on them. This would lead back to the real motive, if any of them knew what it was.

Why would someone kill Edith Finlay? I thought, leaning back into the cushions of my sofa as I looked over at the kitchen table where the paperwork still sat. “And why would my mother move her paperwork here instead of the store...”

My eyes widened, but the thought left me as a knock at the door threw that train off the tracks entirely.

I put my cup down and walked over to the door, warily looking out the window to see who it was before opening the door. I crinkled my brows, more than a bit surprised at who was standing there.

Opening the door, I tilted my head. “Don’t you have other clients?”

Gerry lifted his brows. “Straight to the point. I heard about what happened.”

“Which part?” I asked, lifting my other brow.

He took a breath and sighed. “Oh, all of it,” he answered. “Now, of course, I know there’s no way you could have done such a thing and considering you’re here and not at a hotel, I’m guessing they decided to freeze a few of your assets...”

I thinned my eyes and he made a placating gesture with his hands.

“You misread my meaning here,” he said and he pointed at me. “I’m here to make an offer on the store and building your mother owned... well... I’m here to make it again. Could we talk?”

“Isn’t that what we’re doing right now?” I asked.

“Well, yes, but... it is January and it’s damn cold out here.
