CHAPTER NINETEEN

Deep in thought, it took a minute before Armani heard the knocking at her door. She got up and went and opened it, stepping back.

“Are you ready?”

Armani quickly glanced around the room checking to make sure she had everything. She’d been in Miami for three weeks and was now about to head back home to Atlanta so she could face the mess of a life she’d left behind.

“Yeah, I’m ready.”

She’d come to Miami on a mini vacation hoping to get peace of mind to plot out her next move. Now that she was due to be arriving back in Atlanta that evening, she was feeling like maybe she needed to stay a few days longer.

When Armani got to the airport, luck was on her side. Since she’d chosen to fly back on a Thursday there were no lines. It only took 45 minutes to get through the checkpoints into her waiting area. She stopped at one of the many newsstands and grabbed a Today’s Black Woman, S2S and Upscale Magazine along with a bag of Doritos. As she sat reading, she couldn’t believe that The Rhino Room big grand reopening was being covered by Upscale. Was it really that serious? She guessed it was when she flipped open the magazine and saw a two page spread. The peak of what the new set up would look like was amazing. As she was reading, the flight attendants notified them that they were ready to board first class. She gave her ticket and stepped on the plane.

Armani was so deep in thought that she didn’t realize they were approaching Jackson – Hartsfield until she felt the commotion stir around her. She became conscious of people buckling their safety belts and looked out the window to see the city of Atlanta off in the distance. It was nearly seven in the evening and she could still see some of the smog floating around the tops of buildings in downtown. When she’d checked the weather report before leaving Miami, it had said that the high would be around 98 with the evening time dipping to the high eighties. She knew when she exited the plane the temp would probably be hovering somewhere in between.

Once she cleared baggage claim and gathered her two large cases, she hopped a train to Car Rental Row. There she leased one of the newer model S-Type Jags from Hertz, then got on the phone and called Suede.

When she’d finally broken down and called Suede, as expected she had been her rose amongst weeds helping Armani through her short transitional period. She’d taken charge of things by finding Armani a nice house to lease way out in Stockbridge. They’d been best friends since high school but you never really knew how much of a friend a person is to you until you truly needed them most. This had been that time.

“What’s up chick?” Suede answered.

“Hell, you tell me? What’s the haps?” Armani smiled at hearing her best friend’s voice. “Did you miss me?”

“Hell no I ain’t missed you.
