CHAPTER ELEVEN

Shah and Law spent the better part of the day out riding. Shah didn’t want to set off any alarms, so for him it was business as usual. Like norm, everyone checked in as if nothing was amiss. No one made mention of the situation with Juju and Poohman knowing to not bring it up if Shah didn’t ask, and he didn’t.

Over the past few days Shah’s mind had been constantly moving data around, putting together different scenarios, possibilities and game plans. All the money that Juju had left out on the streets was not his first concern. Shah’s first order of business was to ensure that in spite of everything, The Eastside Family remained intact.

What came second though equally important, if not more, was that he needed concrete legitimate no questions left to be asked proof, of exactly who Juju had been cutting side deals with outside of the fam. And he needed to know if there was any possibility that others in within his organization also knew. That shit alone would spin the ATL on its axes.

Afternoon time, just as Shah and Law were finishing up their meal at Pappedeaux’s in Norcross, Eric Goldstein, who was not Shah’s personal, but The Family’s dedicated attorney, called.

“Yeah!” Shah removed the plastic bib from around his neck, wiped his hands on the napkin and signaled the server for a hot towel to clean his hands.

“I just left DeKalb County. I finally was able to get in to see him.”

“Oh yeah. And?”

“Well the first thing I noted was that when he came into the room the man turned the color of a dead white man when he saw me sitting there.”

“Okay.”

“He tried to recover quickly enough but there was no way he could mask his uneasiness. It was quite apparent that he wasn’t expecting to see me sitting there.” He said. “Once her recovered he began to talk really fast and stated how he thought nobody was going to come for him.”

Shah grunted.

“How was anyone supposed to when he never called?”

Goldstein went on to explain how he had listened without speaking as Juju babbled continuously about how he’d been trying to reach him but that the call would not go through saying he kept getting an automated message that the number was blocking his calls.”

“I let him know it was impossible. As an attorney we take collect calls every day. My office never not accepts a collect call. Furthermore, the phones in the jails that they are allowed to use to call attorneys dialed straight out.”

He continued with the story saying that Juju had paused realizing that he’d been caught in a lie, but didn’t let it stop him from persisting with excuse after excuse as to why he had not been in contact. Goldstein had simply listened.

The lawyer inquired as to what Juju had revealed to during the time he had not had counsel present. Juju again couldn’t look at him. When the lawyer had probed further of the discussion had with the detectives, Juju had vehemently denied that he had.
