THE COLLEGE
CHAPTER 1
The rain was pouring down. The heavy cascade of water covered the small group as soon as they stepped out the door of Dave and Jennyâs house. It pelted their faces; each drop piercing their skin like tiny needles.
Jenny swiped at her eyes trying to wipe away the deluge but she couldnât. âWeâre going to drown out here!â she shouted. No one was paying any attention to her though. Their heads were lowered looking at the sea of dirty water swelling around them. Jenny bent her head against the downpour. It helped to protect her face from the never ending monsoon.
The five of them trudged down the sidewalk. The filthy, murky, flood was well past their knees almost to their hips. They were already cold and soaked through to their skin but still they labored on. Dave and Jim were in the lead. Jenny and Katie were in the back, with Mrs. Taylor in the middle.
Jenny put her hand on Aliceâs back gently pushing the older woman encouraging her to keep going. Maybe if I help her along it will make it easier for her to walk through all of this water, she thought to herself. And if I keep my hand on her back at least I wonât lose her in this blinding flood. She squeezed the older womanâs shoulder comfortingly. âIâll take care of you as best I can,â she promised.
Alice heard Jenny murmur something to her but the deafening rain made it hard for the older woman to hear what she said. She looked back and smiled at Jenny. âYouâre a good girl dear,â she replied softly.
The block they had walked since they left the house felt like miles to Jenny. Pulling herself through the water with the cumbersome backpack on, trying to keep Alice going, and avoid the debris that was floating all around them made her calves very tight. She could feel painful, thick cramps building in her muscles.
She couldnât believe the water could have this kind of affect on her. She ran two miles every day before the lights went out. Plus she went to the gym down the street three times a week for weight training. Jenny shook her head in disbelief. You would have thought that all that exercise would have prepared me better for something like this.
She watched Alice bravely making her way through the deep, burdensome water. The poor woman, she thought sadly. I havenât seen her outside of her house more than twice in all the years she lived down the block from me. The most exercise she probably got before the world went crazy was walking to and from her mailbox. If my legs are tired and aching this much I can only imagine how she feels.
âDave,â Jenny yelled through the rain. âHow much farther do we have to go until weâll be out of this water? My legs are hurting so Aliceâs must be on fire. If itâs much further weâre going to have to find someplace for her to rest.
