This drew some laughter from Akuna and Jarra who settled on his back now and looked at the sky.

The next morning Bunbun went with some men to the big house. He could not believe how big it was. It was the first time he had seen one house built on top of another, two storeys like, you know. Anyway, he was dying to go and look inside that house but the men told him they were not allowed inside.

This day was when he first heard the word work. The tribesmen worked for the man who lived in the big house. There was a lot of talk about this man and his family. He was a round, fat-looking fella who came from England. They said he was cruel to his workers and always came into the tribal camp looking for young black girls. But the men worked for this fella and they were happy that he gave them tobacco to smoke and flour to make bread. The work they did was to ride horses and keep the cattle away from certain places while they ate and ate and got fat, then they took them to the big town to be killed and eaten. The white man got money for this. This was also the first time Bunbun had heard the word money.

What you could do with money, he found out later.

Anyway, the travellers were packing ready to leave when Bunbun came up to them and told them he wanted to stay. The Menindee travellers laughed and teased him about Nimduk. They told him they would be back another day and he could join them and return home with them then, if he wanted to. They were soon gone.
