Hunter stared at Ryder’s car as he left. A piece of his heart went with the geeky computer tech. And why shouldn’t it? Ryder had just said the words Hunter longed to hear. He expected Shelly to tell him she loved him, not in the platonic way, but with a fiery passion. Ryder was his rock, his steady best friend. The guy who knew all of Hunter’s secrets.
“He loves you so much.” Shelly’s voice filtered through Hunter’s thoughts.
“I didn’t hear you behind me,” he said and turned toward the house. “I am still welcome here, aren’t I?”
“You are.” She clasped her hands together. “We’ll talk once the girls go to bed. It’s been a long day for all of us.”
Hunter followed her into the house. Unlike when he’d come home before, he wasn’t at his home—this was Clint’s place. Clint, as nice as he seemed to be, ran the household. He and Shelly worked like a team with the girls. Like a real family. He stood to the side while Clint read the girls a bedtime story. With Clint’s help, she’d unintentionally removed Hunter’s use in the family.
Hunter made his way through the living room and out the front door to the porch. He plopped onto the railing. So many things had changed since the last time he’d left. Kel and Katie were so much taller. When he’d left, Clint had taken his place and the girls seemed to have adjusted without problem. His heart ached. He wasn’t needed any longer.
The door creaked as Shelly crept onto the porch. “Hey.” She dragged a worn lawn chair opposite where he sat. “So.”
“So.” He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “He’s a good guy.”
“Clint? He is. I met him a couple days after you left. I never expected to fall for him, but I did.” She stood and reached for Hunter’s hand. “Hunter, I cried when you left. Cried most of the nights you were gone. You are the glue that keeps me together.”
“But you don’t love me.”
“Not any more than you love me.” She cupped his jaw and tipped his gaze. “Hon, I’ve known you were gay since the day we met. Remember when we tried to fuck? It was a disaster. You weren’t turned on and nothing I did helped.” Her smile wavered. “There’s nothing wrong with what and who you are. I love that you helped me out. If I hadn’t had you, things would’ve been harder. But it’s time for you to do something for yourself.”
“I feel like I’m a stranger here. I fit in with the guys in my unit, but that only goes so far. I’d risk my life for them, but I wanted to be home. I missed this so much—well, not this house. It’s not the one we rented together.” He rubbed his forehead with the pads of his fingers. “I’ve fucked so much up. I don’t want to screw up the girls, too, and I’m afraid I already have.”
“That’s the beauty of this plan.
