“Max! Max!” Leo held his uninjured hand in the ambulance as he gently patted his good cheek. The injured hand where he’d been viciously slashed in the palm was wrapped in several curls of gauze which was slowly developing a stain even though it was elevated to his shoulder in a sling. The right side of Max’s poor face had most likely been kicked and he sported a split lip and a massive purple bruise from his chin to the outer corner of his swollen eye. It was similar to the way Kindness’ ribs had looked when the paramedics checked her over.

Leo wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to learn that Max’s cheekbone was broken. Kindness no doubt had broken ribs. Someone had done a terrible number on two of the people Leo most admired. He could barely control the tremors of fear and sadness that had been rolling over him ever since both agents’ calls had gone unanswered, and the team had raced to Cummings’ house to check on their welfare. Instead of finding their friends happy and healthy, they’d found them both unconscious, broken and bleeding, and most likely poisoned like Jarrett.

“Based on what you’ve told us, both of your colleagues may have been exposed to high levels of LSD,” the paramedic told Leo. “We don’t have anything to counteract it but we need to flush the drugs out of his system with fluids.” She pointed to the dual bags hanging in the rig as it raced toward the nearest hospital. “That’s why we’re running two lines into him.” She smiled. “He’s going to be fine but he’s going to need to urinate as soon as we get there. You should see him revive shortly. I know it’s scary but he’s going to be all right as long as that’s all he took.”

“He didn’t take it,” Leo said. “He was exposed to it at a crime scene.”

She nodded, frowning slightly as she wrote down his vitals. “I understand. I didn’t mean to imply any different.”

Leo was still annoyed. He couldn’t imagine the situation where Max would ever take an illicit drug, especially with the history he shared about what his poor son had endured, beginning at age three. The chemotherapy drugs they’d pumped into his poor little body made him go totally bald and he’d been emaciated from the fact that he couldn’t keep solid food down when he’d passed away five years later. Max had tearfully shared pictures of himself, Ashley, and Ben which had been taken in the hospital during one of his many stays toward the end. He didn’t resemble an eight-year-old child. He’d appeared much younger due to his diminutive form.

“Does it look like his cheekbone is broken?” Leo asked, staring down at the ice pack the paramedics had placed over the right side of Max’s face. Blood covered his swollen lower lip and chin where a large cut had bled all over.

“It’s possible but I don’t want you to worry. He’ll get the best of doctors at Cedars.
