Chapter 15

Sophie sniffs a different spot on the same tree she’s been sniffing for three minutes. This is fine with me because I’m in no hurry to get home. We can extend this walk forever, and it would suit me just fine. It’s better than watching grief slowly strangle the life out of Emmy and ignoring the unspoken tension between me and Eric because he’s investigating my sister for murder.

“Where’s Emmy now?” April asks through my Airpods after I tell her about Armando’s cause of death and Emmy’s position at the top of Eric’s suspect list.

“At home,” I reply. “Poppy is with her. Eric went to work. Later today, we’re going to Adam’s office so Eric can ask Emmy more questions. Poppy offered to stay at the house and answer the door while we’re gone. I showed her how to update the list when someone drops off food.”

“It’s a good thing Knitorious is closed on Mondays,” April says. “What will you do tomorrow?”

“I’ll only work half a day, and Poppy will stay with Emmy.”

Ready to move along to the next tree, Sophie trots ahead of me until she reaches the full length of her leash.

“I’m sure Eric knows Emmy didn’t kill Armando,” April assures me.

“Eric, the future-brother-in-law might know, but Eric the cop needs evidence.”

“Did Poppy get the gossip website to delete the post about Emmy and Armando?”

“I don’t know,” I admit. “I forgot about that stupid post.”

“Want me to check if it’s still there?” April asks.

“You’re already checking, aren’t you?”

“Maybe. It depends. Do you want me to check?”

“Do it.”

“Already done. I opened the website while we argued about it. Do you want the good news or the bad news?”

“Good news,” I reply. “I don’t think I can handle more bad news.”

“They deleted the post.”

“Good job, Poppy!” I sigh. “What’s the bad news.”

“There’s a new post about Emmy. Should I read it to you?”

“Yes, please. And can you send me the link?”

The headline is, Soccer Star’s Life Ends in Sudden Death.

I scoff at the author’s flippant use of a soccer pun for such a serious subject.

Sudden death is the term used when the next goal ends the game and determines the outcome. The article below the insensitive headline reads: Everyone’s favourite morning television host is saying, Goodbye, love! after her husband died under mysterious circumstances at an undisclosed location. Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving widow who lost her perfect match this morning. The soccer widow is grieving in private, at a harmonious lakeside location, under the watchful eye of her sister, a notorious yarn wrangler with a reputation for getting tangled up in murder investigations. According to our sources, the widow’s long-suffering co-host raced to her side with impure intentions, hoping after everything is dead and buried, she’ll look at him and say Hello, number four!

“That’s horrible!” I shout, picking up speed because I want to get home and erase this cruel, toxic excuse for gossip from the virtual universe. “I want to know who wrote it and who tipped them off.
