Chapter Thirty
Hanna
Charleston, South Carolina Present Day
Hanna unlocked the door to her law office in downtown Charleston and then locked it behind her. She had ridden back to town from the beach earlier in the day with Grace who had insisted she take an extra room in their house for a few days until she could sort out longer-term living arrangements in town. She wasn't particularly excited about staying in the same house with Grace's husband, Phillip, after the kiss on the front porch at the beach house. She also couldn't bring herself to stay in some dreary hotel room.
She turned on the light switches for the small suite of offices that took the first floor of an historic old house that had been sparsely renovated years ago for business space. The house was on the fringe of the city's yet to be gentrified neighborhoods and proved more convenient for Hanna's lower-income clientele. There was a small reception area with a desk that one of her intern volunteers usually sat at, a row of six chairs for clients along the front wall of windows and a hall that led back to three private offices and a conference room, a small kitchen and bathroom. Her office was the first on the left.
Hanna turned on the light and walked over to her desk, piled high with files she had been dreading getting back into. She felt guilty about being away these past few days but knew she had to take care of the house issues out at the island. She left the blinds drawn and sat behind the old oak desk she had bought at a consignment shop a couple of years ago. She opened her purse and rummaged through the clutter until she felt the hard grip of the .45 caliber handgun she had brought back from her deceased husband's office out on the island. The visit the past night from the stranger on the beach still had her on edge and she had slept fitfully all night remembering the chilling encounter. She was struggling with whether to call the Charleston PD detective, Alex Frank, but the stranger had made it very clear that any further cooperation with the authorities would lead to unpleasant outcomes. She still couldn't believe she was being threatened, she assumed, by the mob in Miami who had apparently swindled and killed her husband. And what money were they talking about? What in God's name has Ben got me into!
She placed the gun in the top drawer of her desk and couldn't stop her hands from shaking as she pushed the drawer closed. She had never felt the need for a firearm at her offices, even though the neighborhood was still a bit sketchy and her clientele occasionally presented some questionable visitors. It was Sunday and she wasn't expecting any of her staff or clients. It was a day she could try to get caught up on the cases sitting on the desk in front of her. She
