She ended up falling asleep at a reasonable hour for the first time in months. And Dane had made her breakfast, and brought it to her in bed. She felt soothed by it. This wasn’t normal. It was like a different life had been created in the middle of this crater she’d been living in. She would take it.

“You have a key to the storage unit?”

“Yeah,” he said. “I thought it would be easiest if I was the one that held on to it. My mom wants the stuff but... And you know sometimes my dad might want to go see it.”

“I thought your dad was pretty detached.”

“He’s not,” said Dane. “That’s the thing. He either pulls the plug completely, or he’s somewhere drinking himself into a hole and having a breakdown. And sometimes he would go to the storage unit and look through her things. Because he’s not... He had to leave because it broke him.”

“I understand that,” she said.

“I know you do.”

“I can’t even say that I don’t want this to break me, you know. Because it should, right? Shouldn’t it? Going through something like this should do something to you.”

“Well, you’re not broken.”

“I’m not okay.”

He put his hand on her cheek. That touch, that intimate touch, after being without for so long, felt like it caused a soul-deep shift.

“That’s fine. You don’t have to be.”

She leaned in and pressed her forehead to his chest.

“I should have been here the whole time,” he said, his voice rough.

“I wouldn’t have let you. Because I wanted you too much and I could never have let myself have something I wanted.”

“But you can now?”

She let out a long breath. “I...can’t let myself go without you anymore. It’s not about what I deserve, but I can’t keep going like I have been. I need... I need you.”

He traced her lower lip with his thumb. “Margo Box needs someone. Now, that’s something.”

“I don’t know if you’ve noticed but I’m not doing great by myself.”

“You’re doing amazing.”

“Well. I could keep going like I was. But I just want you. And now that’s stronger than whatever held me back before. How about that?”

“Works for me.”

Before they left for the storage unit she heard back from the police and her private investigator. Both reported that there were no leads suggesting that he’d been having an affair with a coworker in Seattle. None of the women in the office reported having a connection to him. Not that they would, but the private investigator told her that there was no indication any of them were particularly upset by his passing. Of course, a woman who was involved with him might’ve suspected...

She didn’t know what she was thinking, trying to rationalize this. There wasn’t actually anything sane to trace here.

If there was another woman, who knew what she’d been told? Margo had no idea what kind of man he’d been with another woman. He’d been lying to her about who he was, and his every action, everything he did.
