CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Adamâs mind raced as he said the word. Ideas fought for space in his head and he had a difficult time figuring out which one he should follow to its conclusion. Each one was a variation of the same thing though â his dad had used the radiation suit to hide the Heartstone someplace radioactive.
âOf course, Iâm not completely sure that this material is what I think it is. Iâd like to test it to find out for sure,â said Horton.
âAbsolutely,â said Adam, handing the case over.
Horton picked up one of the boots. âThis should be all I need.â
âReally?â
Horton nodded. âAll Iâm going to do is place a radiation meter inside it and expose it to radiation for a while. Some materials seem safe but start to leak over time.â
Adam could tell that Horton was excited about the testing he was about to do.
âDo you have a way of exposing it to radiation?â asked Adam.
Horton thought about it for a second. âI do, but in the lab I only have low levels. I wonderâ¦â He drifted off in thought for a few moments, âWere you planning on spending the night here or going home?â
âSpending the night.â
âGood. I have a plan, but Iâll need some time to get it set up.â
âWhatâs your plan?â asked Adam.
âIf I can convince Tilda, Iâll get her to open up the old Mechanical Lab and Iâll place this in there overnight at the point of highest radiation. I have a meter that I can monitor remotely and it will log the readings at whatever time intervals I set. That will give us the truest test. I donât think Iâll have a hard time convincing her. Iâll just tell her Iâm testing a new material and sheâll probably be ok with that.â
âIs there anything I can do?â asked Adam, getting excited as a result of Hortonâs obvious excitement.
Horton came back to reality. âSadly, youâre going to be stuck in here again, sorry.â
Adam was disappointed, but he understood and merely nodded in response.
âItâs not that I donât want to have you help, just bad timing.â
âI understand,â said Adam. âDonât worry about it.â
âThanks,â said Horton. âI probably wonât be able to get the tester placed until later tonight anyway, so Iâll come back and update you after supper. I should have an answer about these panels too by then.â
Adam agreed and Horton left for lunch.
Adam resumed his spot on the couch and began watching TV again, but his mind kept racing through scenarios guessing where his dad had hidden the Heartstone, and if the test proved that the suit was indeed a radiation proof suit, he had a good idea where he wanted to search first.
***
At a little after 6 pm Adam heard another knock at the door. When he opened it he was surprised to see that Augustus was standing there and not Horton.
Adam showed him inside and shut the door.
âHorton just got clearance to do something in the old Mechanical Lab. Does it have something to do with those things you asked your grandpa about?â he asked.
