Nica grinned at Ruby and twisted the knob on the radio, making the music louder. The thrumming beat of the bass reverberated inside the car as the wind whipped around them. Nica had lowered the top on her convertible as they flew down the main drag between Shiloh Springs and Santa Lucia. Nica had pounced on the idea when she’d mentioned she wanted to pick up a couple of outfits. Before Ruby could catch her breath, she’d been practically frog-marched out of the Big House and straight into Nica’s little red ride and over to downtown Santa Lucia.

Luckily, Nica’s friend ran a boutique resale shop, and she’d been thrilled not only to see Nica, but she’d even taken them into the back of the shop and allowed Ruby to look through the items that hadn’t been placed out front for sale yet.

In this case, the price was right, and she’d been able to pick up a couple pairs of dressier jeans and two tops, which would get her through the next few days. However, she doubted she’d been hanging around Shiloh Springs long enough to need more clothes.

“This is great.” Nica grinned at Ruby. “I don’t get to hang around a lot of women when I’m home. Oh, sure, I get to see my brothers’ girlfriends, and they’re all great. But, outside the family, it’s been tougher. Not living at home, I’m away more than here.”

“I’d think you’d have tons of friends, having lived here your whole life.”

Nica tapped her fingers on the steering wheel in time to the music. She seemed so carefree, loving life, not worrying about looking over her shoulder every minute. So different from the life Ruby had lived for such a long time. Always afraid. Never trusting anybody. It had only been in the last several months that she’d even thought about having a life where she didn’t keep a bag packed and ready in her closet in case she needed to take off in the middle of the night.

“I’ve got a couple of close friends, but the rest are people I knew in school. I’ve lost touch with most of them, except to say hello when I visit. Quick weekend trips or when something happens in the family.” Nica shot her a cheeky grin. “Which seems to be almost every time one of my brothers meets their soul mate. I don’t think there’s been a single time where it’s been smooth sailing during their courtships. Of course, that’s a risk you take when you’re dating a Boudreau.”

“Surely not all of them? Lucas is with Jill. They’ve known each other forever.” She couldn’t imagine Jill bringing any drama into her relationship. She was a sweetheart, kind to everybody she knew.”

Nica snorted a laugh. “Ask her about it sometime. Things got pretty hairy. She was held hostage in her apartment by a man obsessed with her. Of course, he was a major drug kingpin, which might be why Lucas freaked out.”

“Surely that’s the exception. I mean—”

“Tina’s former mother-in-law hired someone to kidnap her.
