Chapter Seventeen

Felipe’s hands ached as he unclenched them from the rental’s steering wheel and took a moment to study the farmhouse with peeling yellow paint. He hadn’t driven since he’d learned in Barcelona, and making his way out of Los Angeles had scared him to death. But he’d made it. The only problem had been figuring out where to find Lukas, and that, it turned out, hadn’t been as difficult as he’d feared. All he’d had to do was look for a white stallion.

He parked in the driveway near the house. Off to the right an ambulance sat near the barn, and he recognized the stout, gray-haired form of Lukas’s father. Paramedics wheeled out a gurney, upon which rested a body bag.

“Lukas!” Panicked, Felipe ran headlong toward them. Collins turned and grabbed him. Felipe struggled to free himself, but Collins was too strong. “I was wondering when you’d show up. Luisa’s furious. Sneaking out and leaving Tonio tied up like that.”

“I have to see. Please—” With a glance over his shoulder at the body, Collins said, “Ah. It’s not Lukas. He’s safely on his way to San Diego with Everett. I stayed behind to take care of a few things, including you, it seems.”

Relief drained the strength from his limbs. He might have collapsed if it weren’t for Collins. He rattled off a few prayers of thanks in Spanish before reverting to English. “He’s alive? He’s all right?”

“Alive, yes; beyond that we’re not sure. He’s in a coma.” “Mierda.” He tried to swallow his disappointment. Lukas was alive. That’s what mattered most. He gazed toward the gurney. “Who is that? What happened?” “That’s Aubrey Jackson. Lukas killed him in self-defense.” The name sent a spike of anger and fear through Felipe. “I want to see.”

“I don’t think—” “Please. I’ve had nightmares about him for months. I want to see for myself he’s dead.” Collins studied him a few moments before he answered. “All right.” He escorted Felipe to the ambulance and gestured for the paramedics to step aside. Meeting Felipe’s gaze one last time, he unzipped the bag.

In death Aubrey Jackson had lost his fierceness. His face was pale and stiff, the expression frozen into one of surprise. Felipe yanked his shirt up to protect his nose and mouth against the scent of decomposition and burned flesh. Yet he could not look away. Jackson was dead. The man who’d haunted him for years couldn’t frighten him any longer.

Collins zipped the bag. Gently he guided Felipe away. “Come on. I’ll get you something to drink. We’re going into the house to make a phone call, and then you’re going to take that car back to the airport and go straight back to New York, do you understand me?”

The order jolted Felipe out of his shock. “I’m not going back until I see Lukas.”

“He’s not up to seeing anybody.” Collins’s voice broke. “He’s very ill. Please, Felipe. I don’t need to worry about you too.”

“If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have found him.
