Chapter Twelve
Macon thought either he must be dreaming or the new note was a joke. He’d been avoiding his office all day because he wasn’t sure he was capable of facing Derek with equanimity after seeing Derek and his new flame on campus together. Of course, the new man was tall, blond, and gorgeous. Macon couldn’t possibly compete with someone who looked like the love child of Thor and Captain America.
He’d gotten close enough to hear Derek quoting one of Shakespeare’s sonnets, which hadn’t helped Macon’s composure at all. He didn’t want to be introduced to the new man, didn’t want to be obliged to be polite and pretend he wasn’t wildly envious that this man could rouse Derek’s passions. Derek would have someone to celebrate Valentine’s Day with after all, and Macon would remain alone. It was one of the few times he found himself regretting his single status.
He didn’t return to his office until he was certain Derek was gone for the day, and he was surprised to see a note for Cupid on Derek’s door. He’d assumed their correspondence was over now. What more use did Derek have for a cheerleading Cupid now that he’d found the man he was looking for?
He was filled with both curiosity and dread as he took the note back to his office to read. Maybe Derek was being polite and saying good-bye to Cupid, and Macon didn’t particularly want to see the end of their communication. Their connection.
But it wasn’t a good-bye. Macon stared at the words, trying to make sense of them. These words were saying that the blond hunk was merely a friend and the man Derek was interested in -- who inspired his passion -- was Macon.
He sat down heavily in his desk chair, trying to calm his whirling thoughts. If this note was true -- if it wasn’t a joke -- then Derek wanted him. Derek wanted to quote poetry to him. Only now Derek was worried that Macon was upset for some reason. Macon had been upset when he’d seen Derek with his friend, but he wasn’t upset anymore. Far from it! He couldn’t remember feeling so thrilled -- or so terrified -- in his life.
He had to do something, but he didn’t know what. Should he write another note and reveal the truth, or should he do it in person? Or should he let Cupid disappear without another word and wait for Derek to approach him, then let things take their course?
No, he wanted to do something special after all the self-doubt Derek had experienced. Tomorrow was Valentine’s Day, so perhaps he could use that to his advantage -- which meant he had to get busy. There was no hope of getting reservations at any of the nicer restaurants in town, but he could cook.
Tomorrow, he would tell Derek the truth about Cupid and hope Derek wasn’t angry about the deception. If he was lucky, tomorrow would be the day that they both unlocked their dormant passion with each other.
