Chapter Five

Chasing the Pulse

Breaking up with your girlfriend is a whole palaver for most people, but not for Vonda. I guess, in a way, our entire relationship had been one extended break-up. She could go be possessive of somebody else, thank you very much. We were done.

That week, I devoted more time than usual to practising the pieces Nisha assigned me. I had all kinds of elaborate fantasies about what would go down at my next lesson. Maybe she’d act like nothing had happened. Or maybe she’d be like, “Why don’t we take this lesson into the bedroom?” I bet she could teach me a thing or two, not that I was exactly lacking in experience.

But as Saturday approached, I got really nervous about seeing her. I kept thinking about the kiss that almost happened in Ramiro’s car. If he hadn’t opened his door at exactly that moment, our mouths would have met. I could practically taste her lipstick.

After all that fantasizing, I texted to cancel my lesson. You know when you’re looking forward to something so much you ultimately can’t face it? That.

Nisha was business-like in her response, but I guess she went out drinking with friends that night, because sometime around my third bowl of ice cream, she called me at home. I could barely hear her voice. Wherever she was, it was really loud.

“Why did you cancel your lesson?” she asked, sounding drunk and weepy. “Tell me for real.”

“What?” I shouted into the phone. “Can you... are you standing beside a speaker?”

She laughed raucously. “I’m not standing at all!”

I rolled my eyes, even though she couldn't see me. “You know what I mean.”

After a moment, she proudly squealed, “I’m at The Pussy Mill!”

“Eww.” I didn’t mean to criticize her choice of lesbian hook-up joints, but that place was seriously sleazy. “It’s loud. Can we talk in the morning?”

“No,” she said, drawing the word into infinity. Then she added, “I won’t be drunk in the morning.”

Under my breath, I told her, “I think you might be.”

“Okay,” she sang in a defeated low tone. “I’ll find somewhere quiet. Hold on. I’m putting you between my legs.”

She must have meant the phone.

I could have hung up. But I’m glad I didn’t. Because when she came on again, I could hear her voice really clearly and really close, like she was whispering in my ear.

“I can’t stop thinking about you,” she said, almost purring the words. “I know I shouldn’t say this stuff, because you have a girlfriend—”

“We broke up,” I cut in.

“Oh. Well, that changes everything.” If I thought she was purring before, I don’t even know what this new tone was. “Now I can tell you all the kinky-ass shit I wanna do to you, and I don’t even have to feel bad about it.”

I grabbed my TV remote, and then my brain short-circuited and I couldn’t remember what it was for. “What do you want to do?”
