Chapter Eighteen
While waiting for Troy Randall to come to the station, George got on the phone to the administrator of the Philosophy Department. She wanted to find out more about Kelly Yeoman and who her tutor was. She knew a few people in that department, so it wasn’t going to be a problem.
‘Hello, Jane, it’s Dr Cavendish. I’m enquiring about one of your students, Kelly Yeoman. I’d like to know who her supervisor is.’
‘I know Kelly. She’s a great girl and has been with us for about six years now.’
Should she tell her about her death? Whitney hadn’t said not to.
‘I’m very sorry to tell you, and please don’t share this because it’s not yet been announced, but unfortunately Kelly has died.’ Had she worded it correctly? She wasn’t used to delivering news about deaths.
‘Died? What happened?’
‘The police are investigating it as a suspicious death.’
The woman gasped. ‘You mean she was murdered?’
‘We can’t assume that at the moment,’ George said, thinking that was a ridiculous thing to say, because if it was suspicious, then what else could it be?
‘Does anyone know? What about her family?’
‘Her sister knows, as she was the one who found Kelly’s body. Please keep this confidential. Who was her PhD supervisor?’
‘Carol Anderson.’
‘Is she in today?’
‘I saw her earlier when she came in to do some photocopying.’
‘Okay, thanks. The police will want to speak to her.’
‘I can’t believe it,’ the administrator said. ‘That poor girl and her family.’
‘Yes, I know it’s shocking. But, like I said, please don’t say anything until it’s been publicly announced. The family would be extremely grateful for your cooperation.’
Would the woman be able to keep it to herself? With hindsight, she suspected not.
After ending the call, she went to Whitney’s office.
Whitney glanced up. ‘This bloody report I have to do for Jamieson is doing my head in.’ The phone rang on her desk and she picked it up. ‘Walker.’ She paused. ‘Thanks, we’ll be there shortly.’ She replaced the phone. ‘Troy Randall’s here.’
‘What’s the plan?’
‘I’m going to interview him with Matt, and I want you outside watching.’
Whitney pulled out two earpieces and mics from her drawer, handed one to George, and kept one for herself.
They returned to the incident room and went over to Matt’s desk.
‘I want you with me for Randall’s interview,’ Whitney said.
‘Mr Sleaze, you mean,’ Matt said.
‘You didn’t tell me you thought he was sleazy,’ Whitney said.
‘Maybe sleazy isn’t the right word. Mr Slick is probably better.’
‘George will be watching from the other room, so she can give her opinion.’
‘After the interview, shall we go and speak to Kelly’s PhD supervisor?’ George asked. ‘She’s at work at the moment.’
‘Do you know her?’
‘Only by sight. We haven’t worked together or been on any committees.’
‘Okay, that can be our next port of call.’
They arrived at the interview room, and George went into the room next door. She peered through the one-way mirror at Troy Randall, scrutinising him. His hair was clearly coloured, and his tanned face, especially across his forehead, looked tight and smooth.
