Why hadn’t Annabelle tried to break off her relationship sooner? It may have saved her life. “Who’s the email from?” Madison inched closer to the screen, but the name was hidden at the top.

“We need to wait for a warrant to see anything further.”

Madison knew that, but hoped to find out who’d sent the document.

The front doors opened and the coroner entered. Charlotte led the man to Annabelle and later exited with Teddy.

“What now, Tucker?” Madison said, rubbing her shoulder. The pain from her wound intensified, but she promised herself she wouldn’t take anything. She needed to be fully alert.

“How about you check on Andy? It’s been a bit of time since you left the office. He’s probably frantic.”

Two hours after Tucker and Madison checked on Andy and reassured him that everything was okay, the forensics team left the scene. The coroner removed Annabelle’s body from the office.

Tucker’s fellow constables searched the premises but couldn’t find Daniel Levine. It appeared he’d vanished. However, Tucker reassured her it was just a matter of time before they caught up with the man. His boss put out a BOLO on the vice president.

He heard from the fire marshal who confirmed the fire at her neighbor’s house was arson. Madison’s pulse climbed a notch, sending her heartbeat thrashing in her ears.

Tucker now held the warrant in his hand and served it to the next manager in charge. The man hadn’t liked it and after their counsel inspected the document, they consented.

Not that they had a choice.

Tucker stood beside her at Annabelle’s computer. “Okay, let’s see who sent this email.” He moved the curser and scrolled to the top. The name appeared.

Leah Peters.

Madison stumbled backward, but Tucker caught her. “You okay?”

His arms around her waist transported her back in time to the prom night when they shared a slow dance. His spicy cologne had enticed her and he’d leaned into her arms, whispering his announcement he’d become a Christian.

It crushed her heart because she knew then she’d end their relationship. She couldn’t be with someone who trusted in the One who had betrayed her. God hadn’t stopped the hurt she’d gone through. It was too much for her to handle.

Madison stepped back from his embrace and into the present. She couldn’t deal with the memories right now. “Leah tried to warn Annabelle? This case just keeps getting more and more confusing.”

“Agreed.” He turned back to the screen, but not before she noted the disappointment on his face.

She’d upset the man who stole her heart.

Again.

She shrugged it off and concentrated on the computer. “What else can we find?”

Tucker maneuvered through Annabelle’s calendar. “She had many meetings booked throughout the workday with Levine over the past several months.”

“Do you think he is the key to this case?”

“He’s definitely a person of interest.” He clicked on her search engine and the browsing history. Page after page of the vice president’s activities appeared. The dates were in the past few weeks. Had she been stalking him?

“What’s the date on Leah’s email to her?” Madison asked.
