Why hadnât Annabelle tried to break off her relationship sooner? It may have saved her life. âWhoâs the email from?â Madison inched closer to the screen, but the name was hidden at the top.
âWe need to wait for a warrant to see anything further.â
Madison knew that, but hoped to find out whoâd sent the document.
The front doors opened and the coroner entered. Charlotte led the man to Annabelle and later exited with Teddy.
âWhat now, Tucker?â Madison said, rubbing her shoulder. The pain from her wound intensified, but she promised herself she wouldnât take anything. She needed to be fully alert.
âHow about you check on Andy? Itâs been a bit of time since you left the office. Heâs probably frantic.â
Two hours after Tucker and Madison checked on Andy and reassured him that everything was okay, the forensics team left the scene. The coroner removed Annabelleâs body from the office.
Tuckerâs fellow constables searched the premises but couldnât find Daniel Levine. It appeared heâd vanished. However, Tucker reassured her it was just a matter of time before they caught up with the man. His boss put out a BOLO on the vice president.
He heard from the fire marshal who confirmed the fire at her neighborâs house was arson. Madisonâs pulse climbed a notch, sending her heartbeat thrashing in her ears.
Tucker now held the warrant in his hand and served it to the next manager in charge. The man hadnât liked it and after their counsel inspected the document, they consented.
Not that they had a choice.
Tucker stood beside her at Annabelleâs computer. âOkay, letâs see who sent this email.â He moved the curser and scrolled to the top. The name appeared.
Leah Peters.
Madison stumbled backward, but Tucker caught her. âYou okay?â
His arms around her waist transported her back in time to the prom night when they shared a slow dance. His spicy cologne had enticed her and heâd leaned into her arms, whispering his announcement heâd become a Christian.
It crushed her heart because she knew then sheâd end their relationship. She couldnât be with someone who trusted in the One who had betrayed her. God hadnât stopped the hurt sheâd gone through. It was too much for her to handle.
Madison stepped back from his embrace and into the present. She couldnât deal with the memories right now. âLeah tried to warn Annabelle? This case just keeps getting more and more confusing.â
âAgreed.â He turned back to the screen, but not before she noted the disappointment on his face.
Sheâd upset the man who stole her heart.
Again.
She shrugged it off and concentrated on the computer. âWhat else can we find?â
Tucker maneuvered through Annabelleâs calendar. âShe had many meetings booked throughout the workday with Levine over the past several months.â
âDo you think he is the key to this case?â
âHeâs definitely a person of interest.â He clicked on her search engine and the browsing history. Page after page of the vice presidentâs activities appeared. The dates were in the past few weeks. Had she been stalking him?
âWhatâs the date on Leahâs email to her?â Madison asked.
