‘You want to see me?’ Pete didn’t knock but stalked in, closing the door behind himself, and slumping into a chair. ‘Anything new?’

‘You look like shit.’

‘And proud of it.’

Pete must have been awake all night from the look of him. Clothes were crumpled. Hair was messier than normal. But his eyes were sharp and expectant.

‘I had a phone call from a man implying he has Eliza.’

‘You could have led with that.’

‘Yeah, well the reason I called you in is about Brian Bisley. A warrant is being executed about now to seize his devices and search both his office and apartment. Meg is narrowing down the source of the anonymous emails sent to Darryl and in the interim we want some answers about Bisley’s relationship to him.’

‘So is he here?’ Pete asked. ‘You want me to do the interview?’

‘Not with him. The one with Liz as soon as she’s back. And what I’m telling you is in confidence, Pete. The caller wants Liz to meet with him tomorrow morning.’

‘To do what?’

‘I’ll give you access to the recording of the call but he basically demanded to see her, alone of course, if we want Eliza back.’

‘Then she’s alive.’

‘He said as much.’

Pete ran both hands through his hair and swore under his breath.

‘I’d like you to see if Liz remembers anything else about Ellen’s disappearance before I decide what happens tomorrow.’

‘Liz shouldn’t go,’ Pete said.

‘I agree.’ Terry had opened the door and closed it in his wake with a firm click, his expression grim. ‘We have nothing to convince us this isn’t a past perp she’s dealt with using the abduction to get access to her. Until we have better intel I don’t want her knowing about the phone call.’ He pulled up another chair. ‘The re-creation of the events went well using actors. Media are distributing the finished product to all the usual channels and I did a live broadcast. On the way here I’ve heard there are a couple of promising leads.’

‘Meg is following up one from someone with possible footage of a man and little girl near the park.’ Andy tapped on his keyboard. ‘I’ve just sent you the information she has so far. The best thing for everyone is finding Eliza today.’

Pete got to his feet. ‘Liz will be a while. What if I have a quiet chat with Bisley?’

‘Read the transcript of the last interview first. He’s not under arrest yet and I would prefer he doesn’t get a lawyer,’ Andy said.

‘I’ll be nice.’

‘Pete, push him a bit about the emails. There’s already people looking at his computers and time isn’t his friend,’ Terry said.

With a grin, Pete got to his feet. ‘Nor am I, boss.’
