Hugh curled his fingers around the scotch he had no intention of drinking, staring across the table at both Aiden and Logan who were both playing on their phones. His jaw clenched tightly, wanting to be anywhere but in the meeting room waiting on Laurence and Ben. Every so often, he felt for his phone, worried he’d missed one of the messages from the contractor, or worried that maybe Liam had gone home instead of to the penthouse like Hugh had ordered.
He felt a little bad at deceiving the younger man, but he knew it was the only way he was going to accomplish his little mission. Liam might not have wanted a new place to live, but Hugh would be damned to see him living like that. Mice, of all things, furniture that had been fucked on by dirty college kids and thrown out, food with holes in the boxes? Hugh had used one of Laurence’s guys to strong-arm the landlord into allowing him this renovation. He was assured it would take less than three days to get the place up to code—at the very least—and a few luxury items here and there. It meant he had to distract his little sugar baby for seventy-two hours. He’d deal with the fall-out when it came.
Which it would. But luckily, Liam’s return to his apartment would coincide with Hugh leaving the state to deal with this shit-show of a diplomatic mission Laurence was sending him on. His very last, in fact, before he was released.
A small, burning anxiety settled in his gut. Though he’d never be without the protection or loyalty of OMNI, no longer being privy to the inside didn’t sit well. It wasn’t unsettling enough to keep him in, but he wasn’t going to bask in the change. Not right away.
He had a feeling having Liam around would be the only thing that kept him from going completely insane.
“Sorry,” came Laurence’s voice from the doorway. He walked in, Ben at his heels looking stoic as ever in his ever-present leather jacket in spite of the heat, and his tinted glasses which were resting low on his nose.
Ben was the sort of man who didn’t need bulk or height to terrify. There was something about him—something dark and dangerous, something that told you he didn’t subscribe to the same morals or empathy that normal humans did. Even Hugh had hard lines, and he had a feeling Ben would have crossed them just for fun if anyone had asked him to.
He took his spot behind Laurence’s chair, ever vigilant—a part of the team like everyone else, but never far from Laurence’s elbow. Hugh went back to pretending like the guy wasn’t there as Laurence got settled, then took a minute to sip his coffee.
“How are we today?”
Aiden rolled his eyes. “I’m missing a shoot with Bod Weekly.”
Logan snorted, shaking his head. “A real tragedy.”
“My premier is in less than a month. I’m not fucking around on press just because you think I’m vain, asshole,” Aiden shot back.
