Chapter One: Island Escape

"How many bathing suits do you think I should bring with me?" Jane asked, picking up a bright orange suit and putting it back down on the bed for the third time.

"How about none of them because you are staying here with me."

David stretched dramatically over the foot of the bed, hanging with his head upside down off of the edge. Jane sighed and shook her head at him.

"I told you, I need to get away from here for a while."

She picked up the orange bathing suit again, evaluated it, and shoved it into her luggage. With a groan of effort, David flipped himself onto his belly so that he was still draped off of the edge of the bed but now able to look at her with his best version of puppy-dog eyes.

"Why?"

Jane folded a few more pieces of clothing and tucked them into the case, doing her best to fill in all of the corners so she would only have to deal with this one piece of luggage and her carry-on rather than trying to juggle several bags during her solo trek across the airport.

"I feel like I've hit some kind of wall. Maybe I'm having a quarter-life crisis. All I know is that things have been great for years, but that is just the problem. They've just been consistently, reliably, tediously great. I have the perfect career, the cute little starter house, even the animal equivalents of the two-point-two children."

"Which one is the point-two?" David asked.

"Hudson," Jane replied, gesturing at the large aquarium across the room where Hudson the bearded dragon looked back at them from his favorite flat rock.

"Ah. So what you are telling me is that you have everything you could want in life."

"Everything but a man to enjoy it with."

"You have me," David pouted.

Jane leaned down to take his face in her hands and smiled at him.

"You are not exactly my type," she said before straightening and looking back at her luggage.

"You aren't mine either," he retorted.

Jane laughed.

"Tell me about it," she pushed down on the multicolored assortment of clothes one more time, "They need to create luggage for curvy girls. The twiggy ones can fit like three bathing suits in the space I need for one. I don't feel that is fair."

She rolled up one more skirt and poked it down into a small gap along the side of the case. Finally satisfied the she had filled the single rolling suitcase to its absolute capacity, she flipped the top over and pressed it down with her upper body as she fought the zipper closed.

"Well, if you insist on leaving me for an entire week maybe
