Chapter 6
âThat was wonderful,â Gemma said when the song was over and she and Keilani separated. Devil In Disguise played next, but neither took much notice. They were both a little flustered from the close experience theyâd just had.
âIt really was,â Keilani agreed. âGemma, I really hope Iâm not being too forward in asking this, but would you like to get dinner with me tonight? I know this really great place, authentic Hawaiian food â I mean really authentic, away from all the tourists-â
âThat sounds wonderful,â Gemma said, unable to contain her excitement. âCan I meet you in the lobby around seven?â
âPerfect,â Keilani agreed. âI canât wait.â
âMe neither,â Gemma replied, hoping Keilani could hear just how genuine she was.
The two women came together that night at the exact time and place that they said they would. Keilani explained that the restaurant was close enough that they could walk to it if they took a back way through some foliage, so that was the way they went. Neither minded a little bit of dirt.
When they got to the place Keilani had described, Gemma found that it was a small, hut-like building, and it was definitely away from the usual tourist destinations.
âKeilani!â came the booming voice of large Hawaiian man as they approached the establishment. âHow is Iekika doing?â he asked, coming outside to meet the girls halfway.
âSheâs still feeling sick, but when I saw her this afternoon she was up and moving around,â Keilani said, coming up to give the man a hug. âGemma, this is Makaio, and old family friend of my fatherâs. Makaio, this is my friend Gemma. Sheâll be in Hawaii for the next month and a half.â
âSo good to meet someone close to Keilani,â Makaio said, pulling Gemma in for a hug, which she returned. âWhat can I do for you two?â
âWeâd like a table for tonight, please,â Keilani said. âI want to show Keilani some real Hawaiian food and people. Sheâs here studying the Kapena volcano.â
âAh, a science type. But tell me, Gemma, do you know the story of Tutu Pele?â Makaio asked.
âNo, I donât think I do,â Gemma said. Makaio led them inside and got them seated, asking one of the young men hanging around in the back to get them some drinks.
âTutu Pele is the volcano goddess in Hawaiian culture,â Makaio said, pulling up a chair and sitting across from Gemma and Keilani. âShe controls all of the volcanic activity on the island, or so the legend says. Sheâs known to live in a fire pit called the HalemaÊ»umaÊ»u crater at the summit caldera of KÄ«lauea. Kilauea is one of the earthâs most active volcanoes, so you see where that belief comes from.â
âOh! That makes something in my field of study make much more sense now,â Gemma said.
âWhat is it?â Keilani asked.
âWhen there are threads of volcanic glass fibers, which is molten rock thrown into the air and blown into strands, we call that Peleâs hair. And when we see solidified lava drops that make volcanic glass, those are called Peleâs tears.
