Chapter 4

It was rare that Lindsay's anxieties about a given situation turned out to live up to the actuality of things, but her attendance at the book club was more or less as much the horror movie that she'd nervously anticipated it to be in her initial resistance to going. Almost the minute she'd walked through the front door, she'd realized with alarming clarity that she did not belong among these girls, and that she was about to find herself severely out of her element. It was too late to turn around after being seen by the librarian neighbor, however, and she felt more or less obligated to proceed with what was sure to be several hours of social torture.

All of the girls, without exception, were at least a year or two older than Lindsay. When she stepped into the living room they scarcely took notice of her, occupied as they were with laughing and giggling their lungs out, many of them, she noted, drunk off their asses, regardless of whether or not they seemed of legal drinking age. The only person who did seem to take notice of her at all was the host's daughter, Sarah, whose fawn eyes locked almost immediately on Lindsay, and which Lindsay proceeded to avoid as fervently as possible. She'd never been this shy around girls in the past, she thought, and she couldn't understand what was getting into her now.

She disappeared into the corner as quickly as possible, and scarcely made a peep for the next forty-five minutes. Her ears burned and her cheeks became red, and her body shook with anxiety as she took in the conversation of the overeager girls all around her. They all had copies of the book folded across their laps, although the discussion tended to weave in and out in terms of subject matter. One minute, they would be talking about the sexual dynamics of the book's two main characters- the shy, unassuming protagonist, and the powerful, domineering billionaire who seduced (stalked?) her- and the next they would be giggling away as childishly as ever, fantasizing about what it must be like to be plowed by the main male character, and comparing descriptions of his penis with those of guys they'd personally slept with. At one point, during discussions of the book's many sex scenes, one of the girls pulled a pair of erotic, fuzzy handcuffs out of her purse, and a loud eruption of whistling and cheers rang out amongst the group, as the girl proceeded to describe the manner in which she and her boyfriend had put the cuffs to good use, inspired by the BDSM play in the novel. One of the other girls, then, promptly went on to best her in her description when, much to everyone's delight and astonishment, she pulled out a vibrating pink dildo from her purse, and detailed not only how her boyfriend had used it on her, but how she'd made her boyfriend submit to her, and used it on him anally.
