He was a big, cheerful middle-aged guy, but he said most of the exam was going to be done by Dr. Steger , an intern, a kind of trainee-doctor. I said fine (like what was I going to say?) and he took me in to the exam room to Dr. Steger . The intern just said to call him Max, and asked if it was OK to call me Cal. Fine, since he was going to see me naked, let’s be on a first name basis.

The exam was the most thorough – and I mean THOROUGH – I’d ever had, and lots of it they had to do twice because the doctor had to check the intern’s work. The eye, ear, “Open and say aaa” exams went fairly quickly, but after I had stripped down to my shorts there was a lot of stuff that I hadn’t gone through before. He was having me bend over to see how flexible I was, go up on my toes, stand on the scale to measure my height and weight, close my eyes and bring my finger to my nose; he was poking and prodding me everywhere.
