I spend the whole evening and next day trying to brainstorm ideas but I still come up empty handed. Even when I think that I’ve finally found something clever I quickly realize that it’s just too cute and sentimental, which is the last thing that Fiona is interested in.

Desperate for an idea before we leave town tomorrow, I head down to Hollywood and meet Karly, a mutual friend of Fiona and I, for a drink.

I find Karly sitting alone in the corner of an upscale rooftop bar, which apparently doubles as a pool party on the weekends as young, socialites wander past us in bathing suits.

“Trish!” Karly says as she sees me, standing up to give me a hug. “You excited for tomorrow? Passport ready?”

I shrug. “Yeah, sure.”

Karly cracks a sly grin. “Oh god, what is it?”

“I don’t know what to get her,” I admit.

My friend laughs and turns back to the bartender. “Can I get a beer for this girl? Thanks.”

“I don’t suppose you have any ideas,” I ask, completely exhausted.

“I’ve got plenty of ideas!” Karly says. “Why don’t you just write her something nice on a card?”

I roll my eyes. “I do that every year. Listen, there is a time and a place for being sentimental, but this year is not one of those times. Fiona has always had more to give then I have, and for once I want to turn the tables.”

Karly nods in understanding as the bartender hands me a beer. I take a long pull, actually getting worried for the first time in a long time. I kind of like it.

Karly is an actress, and a good one. After a string of successful television spots she finally landed a movie lead and it turned out to be a surprise blockbuster, catapulting Karly into fame and fortune. She’s not nearly as wealthy as Fiona, or me by way of marriage, but she’s not doing too bad for herself these days.

“What do people get you for your birthday?” I ask Karly. “You’re rich.”

Karly laughs. “Dude, you’re freaking out about something that doesn’t matter. She’s going to be fine with whatever you get her. People get me all sorts of stuff and I don’t really care what it is because it’s the thought that counts.”

I shake my head. “There is a big difference here, a huge one. You’re a girl who came from nothing so you appreciate the effort, Fiona is a spoiled brat.”

Karly can’t help but crack up as I say this, and seconds later I join her. The entire situation seems so absurd but it is all absolutely true.

“Alright,” my friend finally says, her eyes wandering across the ass of a cute young girl who struts by us in her bikini. “You really want to know the best thing I’ve ever gotten for my birthday that didn’t cost a dime?”

My eyes light up. “Yes! Tell me!”

Karly leans in. “The best thing I ever got was when my girlfriend arranged a threesome that was totally focused on me; strap-ons and everything.
