Nikki and I came out of the pastor’s office where she had gotten dressed. She decided after everything that had happened, she didn’t want to do it at the B & B. I peeked through the large double doors from the church vestibule into the sanctuary. It seemed as though the entire town of Pembroke Cove had filled the pews. That was a slight exaggeration since in reality there were only fifty people on the guest list. Steve was standing with the minister at the altar and next to him was Gage. He was handsome, his long, lean frame filling out the gray tux perfectly. His hazel eyes locked on mine, and he gave me an appreciative smile as he pointed from my shoes to my hair. The dark-green dress suited my chestnut-brown hair and sable eyes. Nikki had known what she was doing when she chose it for me. I gave him a wink as I closed the doors.

“Steve is waiting for you at the altar, and he looks so handsome.” Nikki was beautiful in her mother’s A-line gown in cream antique lace over a champagne silk lining. One of the bell sleeves held a tiny pocket big enough for the pale blue handkerchief I had tucked inside. The small elegant train brushed the floor, and it was absolute perfection on the bride.

“Does he look nervous?” she managed to eke out.

“It seems like you have enough jitters for the two of you.” I placed the cascading bouquet of pale-pink roses tied with an emerald-green ribbon in her hand. “Are you ready for me to open those doors?”

“In just a second. I have something that must be said.”

Her face was serious just like her tone of voice. “What is it?”

“You and Gage are good together. I know it took a long time for the two of you to tell the other how you felt, but don’t let it be another fifteen years before you take the next step.”

Why was she thinking of me on her wedding day?

She gestured to her dress and flowers. “I’m standing here ready to marry the love of my life, and I want you to experience the same joy. You and Gage belong together and not just solving the latest mystery in town. Promise me you’ll think about setting a date?”

I kissed her cheek and said, “I promise.”
