“How do you know all this?” I said.

“I used to be a hit man. Ingrid tried to hire me; I turned her down. I don’t get into family fights.”

“Cut the bullshit and tell me. I want to know,” I said.

He looked up at me and grinned. “I told ya: I used to be a hit man. For the mob. You meet a lot of influential people that way. The trouble is, you lose contact with them again.” Another big grin.

Why was I listening to all this drunken babble? This guy was flowing with venom, and I wasn’t smart enough to turn off the tap. “The things you’re saying-“

Pindero held up a hand to hush me. He listened to the phone and wrote down some prices and then put the phone down. After a long silence while he studied the bottom of his mug of whisky as if trying to read his fortune there, he looked up. “That’s the way Petrovitch does things. That’s the new way to do business. Speedy, smooth, and without a great deal of paperwork. You murder the opposition.” He laughed. “Murder them. It was a marriage made in heaven.”

“You’re crazy.”

“I’m not crazy. You’ll find out one of these days. It’s people like that who are putting us hit men out of business.” He shifted in his chair and fixed me with an intense stare. “You tell Ingrid you couldn’t find me. I’m not about to hurt her; tell her that. But she has to solve her own problems.” I was near him and he reached out to grab my arm, but I stepped
