CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
Palmerâs eyes flickered open; he couldnât see anything. It took him a minute to realise that he had a black canvas bag on his head. He was sitting on, what felt like, a wooden chair, but couldnât move. His arms were tied behind his back and his ankles were fastened to the legs of the chair. He slowly moved as much as he could to check for injuries, he couldnât feel any spots of sharp pain, no broken bones, or dislocated joints. He moved his head, his jaw ached, and he could taste blood. He ran his tongue around his teeth, one of them felt like it was cracked. Whatever they had done to him so far, it hadnât done any real damage, yet. He expected that to change.
He stayed still, listening. He could sense people moving around him, but no one was saying anything. If they intended to torture him, this would be the first step, psychological torture. They wanted him to feel isolated, it heightened the fear. This wasnât Bradâs style though. Palmer imagined him standing off to one side polishing his pliers or sharpening a knife.
The canvas bag was roughly ripped from Palmerâs head and a bright light shone in his face. He squinted, unable to open his eyes. He tried to turn away from the light, but it was all around him. His mouth was dry, his heart pounded.
âWho are you working for?â
Palmer couldnât work out what direction the voice was coming from. A punch crashed into his solar plexus followed by one to his jaw. He doubled over but someone grabbed his hair and pulled him back up.
âWho are you working for?â
Palmerâs senses were all working in overdrive, trying to get some information to explain the assault his body was going through. More punches landed, more questions. Then, it stopped.
Palmer gasped for breath and blinked his eyes. The floodlights that surrounded him were switched off and moved away. He could now see Wallace standing in front of him. âThatâs enough of that. Loganâs a big tough guy. Heâs not going to tell us what we need to know because we beat him up.â
Palmer wasnât too sure. Much more of that treatment and he might have broken.
Wallace bent over. His mouth close to Palmer. âWe donât want to hurt you, Logan. Just tell us who you are working for, and weâll let you go.â
Palmer doubted that too. He was quite sure Brad wanted to hurt him.
Wallace shouted to one of the men. âGet him a drink.â
One of the guards handed Wallace a plastic bottle. He unscrewed the top and held it to Palmerâs lips. âThere we go, Logan. See, we arenât all bad. You were one of us after all.â
Palmer took a mouthful.
Here we go, weâve had bad cop, this must be good cop.
âHow about untying me.â Palmer didnât think there was any chance of that, but it was worth a try.
âOh, I donât think so. Not just yet. Now, Logan, who are you working for?â
Palmer cleared his throat and whispered.
