Despite knowing I needed to be at full power tomorrow, I spent a restless night tossing and turning on the mattress, glad Astor was in another room, and gladder that we hadn’t gone further than we had. Why had I let my dragon take control, as though she’d entirely forgotten he’d contributed towards the extinction of my entire species? Sure, I hadn’t been with anyone in a while, which didn’t help—being on the run and in constant danger kind of makes commitment difficult. That my instincts had latched onto someone new wasn’t surprising, but I’d only ever been with shifters, not a human I could snap in two with my claw. Okay, he was stronger than he looked, and possibly part supernatural…

Ugh. That’s a whole other issue. Astor hadn’t mentioned it since, but surely he must be curious about what the process that turned him into an Elite had done to him. I wouldn’t have thought Malkin would have used a method which would have negative consequences, so his abilities probably didn’t have downsides like ours did. But on the other hand, he’d callously experimented on his other soldiers. When Astor had said Malkin had used the same tranquiliser on them that he’d used on Cori, I believed him. The cruel bastard…

Wait a second. We might not have the Moonbeam, but we had successfully undone the effects of the iron poisoning on Kit. Which meant… he can translate the faerie text.

I pulled the notebook out, careful not to make the pages rustle as I turned them. The text was as inscrutable as ever, though I’d read it backwards. What did it contain—our history? The whereabouts of the other dragon shifters, if they existed? They must exist. The hunters wouldn’t have been able to find them otherwise.

Which wasn’t exactly encouraging. The other dragon shifters must have had good reason to hide the words in a language none of us could read. But then, why give us no way to translate it? Faeries had been even rarer in this realm before the invasion.

The mattress next to mine shifted.

“Morning,” Will said sleepily. “What’s up, Ember?”

I glanced at Kit. “The notebook. If anything happens today… I want to make sure we know for sure if he can help us with it or not.”

“Shit, I forgot about that,” said Will in an undertone. “He can speak some kind of faerie tongue, but that doesn’t mean the text is the same. We’ll figure that out before we leave.”

“Figure what out?” asked Becks, yawning and stretching.

The faerie stirred. I mouthed, the notebook translation. Becks nodded, understanding. I hesitated as Kit sat up, blinking. His gaze went to Will first. Apparently he trusted him the most. Probably because he’d seen Will shift, but not me or Becks. He was likely more comfortable with supernaturals than humans after his imprisonment. But there was no way he’d be able to go home, and we still hadn’t come up with a solution, short of trying Giselle’s patience until she or Astor snapped.
