Chapter 33

Malik’s deep voice rumbled through the room. “Just what are you looking for, my love?”

Amira answered him, her voice moving as if she was examining different parts of the collection. “I’m not sure. The women with Magnus seemed very interested in the Castle. I saw the one who fought Kellan looking through the logbook while I was ushering tourists out of the building.”

“I liked her. Feisty and scrappy. Good in a fight. She’d make a good werewolf,” Malik said.

“I said the same thing. But when I saw them looking through the logbook, I couldn’t figure out what was so interesting in there to someone who was so interested in finding a lost artifact that they’d choose fighting a werewolf over waiting for paperwork to go through. After they left, I looked through it myself. It took a while, but I found it. An entry with the same last name. Blaze. But this was a Sophia Blaze that visited twenty-five years ago.”

“And you think this woman is a witch who has discovered the fountain of youth or something?” Malik sounded unconvinced.

Amira snorted. “More likely a relation. A daughter or a niece. Maybe a cousin? Regardless, Sophia Blaze signed in to come here. You should have seen them in the other warded room. They didn’t find what they were looking for. I could tell.”

“And you think they broke in here?” Malik asked skeptically.

Amira’s voice drifted further away. “Maybe? I don’t know.”

“We checked with the guards on the way in. No one saw or smelled anything,” Malik said.

“Call it women’s intuition. I didn’t sense it before, but something just feels off about the whole situation. Maybe I’m just on edge from the wards being down until the mages recharge them, but until I check every nook and cranny of this place, I know I won’t be able to rest tonight,” Amira said, her voice moving as she presumably inspected the room.

“And neither will I,” muttered Malik. His voice sounded closer.

“What was that?” Amira asked sharply.

Malik’s voice sounded louder. “Nothing, my love. I just don’t like my evenings with you being disturbed. There are things we could do other than examining a dusty old room that is on lockdown. Fun things. Pleasurable things.” His voice went a bit husky at the end and the sound of kissing filled the room. I tried not to cringe at my inadvertent and now awkward eavesdropping.

“Enough of that,” Amira said. Her words were chastising, but her tone was light.

The sound of a regretful sigh rose from Malik. Amira continued. “Well, if you helped me search, we’d be out of here and back to bed all the faster.”

“Just use your nose,” Malik said, sniffing loudly. “See? It smells the same as last time. Besides, you got a good whiff of their scent, didn’t you? You’d be able to tell for sure if one of the newcomers had broken in.”

A cold sweat broke out on my brow as I heard Amira sniff at the air. I never thought I’d
