On her way to the washroom, Suzy had paused to examine a noticeably recent photograph of a truck. It was framed and hung on a wall a few feet from their table. When she returned, she drew Nick’s attention to it.

“Nick, that is a photograph of a 1990 R model, Mack semi. It’s a tandem axle road tractor. Four hundred horsepower. Eighteen gears.”

Nick felt she was playing a game with him,

“Have you just read that, and memorized it?”

“No, not at all. That’s what I drove when I got my commercial drivers license. I drove commercially for five years. On and off. I wasn’t a regular driver. I filled holes in times of crisis. It was my daddy’s business and he always encouraged me to apply for a CDL. I did as he asked because I wanted it just as much as he did. I didn’t get behind the wheel as often as I would have liked, because my dear papa used to worry too much about me when I was on the road.”
