ROYCEE CONTINUES HER WEEKLY STUDY SESSIONS WITH MARTIN, BUT THERE is a new dimension to their relationship.

“Royce, would you like to go to the movies this weekend? There’s a double feature at the drive-in,” inquires Martin.

“Oh, Martin. I’m sorry.” Roycee’s face flushes to a vibrant rosy hue. “I should’ve said something before. We just can’t.”

“Okay,” Martin says dejectedly. “You got something else going on?”

“I mean we can’t date—ever,” she replies sadly. She looks at him and reads the hurt on his face.

“Why not? You have to admit we have fun together, even when we’re studying we’re a great team. Don’t you think so?”

“Yeah, of course we are. I’m not denying that. What I meant is not until next semester when Jerry’s no longer my roommate.”

“Oh man, wouldn’t you know it? What in the hell does Jerry have to do with this?”

“Jerry still has strong feelings for you and I’d be crossing the line if I become more involved. I just know it would shatter her if you were to stop seeing her altogether. She’d blame me. She’s a very complex girl.” Roycee refrains from telling him that she’s fearful that Jerry might try to take her own life.

“What?” exclaims Martin! “Shatter her? Jerry? Are we talking about the same gal here? That girl is as tough as they come.” He takes a deep long breath to calm himself. “Well, one thing’s for damn sure, she’s godawful persistent. And she’s just so…. oh heck, never mind.” He tenses up and shrugs as if to expel the entire ugliness of the situation away.

Roycee persists. “Jerry’s confided things to me which lead me to believe that she really, really cherishes your relationship.”

“Relationship? The girl is way off-base, so far off the beaten path of reality it ain’t even funny,” he gesticulates by drawing circles around his ear. “How can I explain this? We’ve never had a real relationship and never will. Never together in the way that really counts,” he exclaims in exasperation. “To tell you the truth what happens is well, heck—I’m not proud of this because it makes me look like a total jerk. What happens is,” Martin swallows hard and looks at her sheepishly, “well, we just meet by accident and end up together. She knows how to tease a guy and then I get suckered into the relationship. And she’s always the instigator. I know that’s no excuse. It’s hard to explain. Like I lose control of my senses. She’s a grand master of manipulation.”

“Well, for a woman that’s a big deal when you sleep with her,” remarks Roycee.

“It would be for you, but not for a girl like Jerry. Heck, I reckon she’s probably screwed every guy in town by now. I know of several in the Inn who have said as much. Like … well never mind, forget it, sorry about that.”

“Aren’t you being a little hard on her? I know for a fact that it’s a big deal for her, that she likes you a lot and only you.
