Leah had thought she liked Christmas carols. That was before she’d been forced to listen to the same handful of songs, over and over, in multiple styles.

It seemed that Mr. Westwood had a playlist. A traditional playlist, that needed to be played as part of the post-Christmas Eve dinner festivities. She had liked the idea of Christmas traditions, but the Westwood’s took to Tradition with a rigidity that would have impressed a Talmud’s worth of rabbis. Only rabbis would have argued, and arguing was clearly Not Allowed in the Westwood household.

Mr. Westwood and Julia’s father seemed to share an intense rivalry over their alleged love of music. She hadn’t quite caught Julia’s father’s name, but she was rapidly running out of cope and rather hoped that it would never be relevant again. It didn’t seem so much that either of them was enjoying the playlist. What was most important was to produce the most erudite commentary on each track. But since her other conversational option was the women’s round of gossip about people she’d never heard of, she was mostly listening to the music debate.

She’d heard of people getting sick of Christmas music, but she’d thought that was mostly from folks trapped in retail hell and forced to listen to non-stop Justin Bieber covers and “The Christmas Shoes.” She’d always liked “O Holy Night,” but now they’d listened to it as performed by an opera singer—a “coloratura,” whatever that meant, but it was a very important point to Mr. Westwood. Another, different opera singer—a tenor, she at least knew that term. A hammered dulcimer, which Mr. Westwood clearly thought less of, but deferred to Mrs. Westwood’s preferences with great show. Then finally, an entire children’s choir of ethereal cherubs. Leah kept hoping one of them would fart and they would all dissolve into snickers, but she supposed they wouldn’t have kept that take. Each one was accompanied by a short lecture from Mr. Westwood, rebutted by Julia’s father. “O Holy Night” at least was moderately better than his weird obsession with “Pat-a-pan,” which she was convinced Mr. Westwood only liked because it was in French and everyone else in the room had taken Spanish. And “Coventry Carol,” which to Leah’s dismay, was apparently about murdering all the children in Herod’s Israel. She’d liked the tune before, but would never be able to enjoy it again.

As the cherubs stopped singing about falling on their knees, which made her think all kinds of horrible thoughts about Catholic Church scandals that she immediately tried to shunt out of her mind, Mr. Westwood cued up the next version, featuring harpsichord. He wanted them to listen carefully to the change in chord structure.

The intense gossip session was not listening to the chord structure. It wasn’t anything like the gossip sessions she was used to with her mother and her friends. Her mom was pretty blunt with her disapproval of various people’s life choices, as necessary, as well as boastful celebrations of those she favored. Which
