Cultural types arise as a result of the size of an organization, the national culture, and the history of the organization. Role cultures tend to emerge over time and especially in large, stable organizations. All of these cultural types are, of course, prototypical and a “pure” case rarely exists in real educational institutions. They do, however, help us as leaders to examine the culture of our own organizations and decide whether the predominant culture is responsive to educational change and innovation.

Task 8.2

Identify an organization you are familiar with for each of Handy’s organizational cultures. Describe the characteristics that helped you make this identification.
