Dear Diary – Early August 2002

The sun really is a power outlet for us mere mortals. After a few days under the sun – and a few lovingly prepared home-cooked meals – color had returned to Ryan’s cheeks. He was looking refreshed, regenerated, rejuvenated. His complexion and bruises had improved. So did his mood. In no time, we were back to our old habits and antics, as if nothing had happened. We shared house chores, tanned and sang along to the songs on the radio. We had breakfast in front of the TV, lunch in the backyard and post-dinner tea on the front porch sometimes. We occasionally took the kids to the new park in the area and took our walk past Fancy House – which hadn’t changed. Ryan boasted that our lavender bed was ten times better than theirs. Ours had soul. Theirs was just fancy. Too fancy. Arrogant, even.

We talked about our dreams of the future and fondest memories of the past. We bickered over random annoyances and argued about pop culture and politics. Try as I may have, I could not for the life of me understand how he could be pro-gun and not believe that 9/11 was an inside job. We often agreed to disagree because our debates could get heated.

Despite our differences of opinion on some matters, it was so great having him around and seeing him be himself again! I wasn’t even putting the moves on him anymore. I cooled off during the school year and realized that it wasn’t very respectful of me to play with his boundaries. He made it clear that he wanted to be friends and nothing more. So, that’s what I was going to do. Okay, maybe it wasn’t very platonic of me to give him those lavender kisses… but I wasn’t the one kissing him, the lavender was! It was my only transgression, and things remained friendly and proper between us… until they didn’t.
