Chapter Twenty-Six

The crowd filed into the amphitheater, the energy palpable. Goosebumps percolated on Lily’s skin with all of the excitement pinging off of everyone.

By this time, all of the attendees had visited each of the day’s stations. Nothing had been as invigorating as the Focuser. Now that Simon was coming in to address them again, the day was shining brightly again.

Except for a thin black mesh stretched over the open seating to protect everyone from the California rays. Lily didn’t know why that annoyed her, but it did. Let the sun in. Why dampen its beauty?

Sarah Jane stopped in the middle of the row, and the two girls sat down. They sat closer to the stage now since both of them had made a point to get in line early for that very purpose. Lily blushed when she realized that mostly girls populated the front of the line.

The guys brought up the rear. She glanced behind, scanned the crowd, and easily picked out Harry and Demarcus—the spiky redhead sitting next to the guy in dreadlocks. They appeared deep in conversation so they didn’t see her. Must be talking about some important man stuff.

She also spied Missy chatting up some tall blond guy farther back. Run, dude, while you still can. Lily couldn’t resist a chuckle at the thought. At least the poor boy had provided a focus for Missy and kept her off Lily’s case.

An elbow tapped her arm, and Lily turned.

“I’ve heard that Simon isn’t dating anyone right now. He broke up with that actress, Shannon Dye.” Sarah Jane wagged her eyebrows at the statement.

“I’m sixteen. I think I’m too young to have a chance with him.”

Sarah Jane shrugged. “I just turned seventeen, and he’s only twenty-four. Who’s to say what could happen? Maybe he likes mousy girls with ridiculously pale complexions.”

Lily gave her a side hug. “Hey, don’t believe that crap. You are lovely, inside and out. See what those bullies do? They get you buying into their lies.”

Interesting how well Lily could give out the advice she had problems accepting herself.

Brooke Stephens, her counselor in Washington, had been helping Lily claw out of the abyss after the accident. If only Dad hadn’t chosen to move right then so he could cope. Maybe the last year wouldn’t have been such a black mess.

The sound system fired up with a pulsating string section. The pyrotechnics didn’t flare to life today, and the build-up didn’t last long. Simon strode out on stage wearing his checkered shirt with the cuffs rolled up.

The cheers and shrieks from the audience around her hurt Lily’s ears. Normally, she would’ve thought it all too much. Hero worship wasn’t her style. But the genius entrepreneur didn’t have to host an all-expenses paid conference for a bunch of teens.

And his hotness factor didn’t hurt.

A screen lowered behind Simon as he tried to calm the group down. It still took a few minutes for everyone to quiet themselves. He pointed to the small wireless mic along the side of his cheek.
