The five of them clumped around the two concrete benches. Gus wanted to climb the nearby boulder, but Marcy told him he had to stand near to hear, because she was not going to shout their information.

Herman rubbed his hands together and a sparkle showed in his eyes. “What’s the new development?”

The four of them stared intently at Marcy, who cleared her throat. “Todd Makowski has just filed paperwork to emigrate. Lance called me this morning. Apparently, he thought this might happen and had an alert for when it did.”

Jake and Herman exchanged concerned looks, while Gus asked, “Where to?”

“Ireland.”

“Heard good things about it. Very green, plenty of pubs, and they still like Americans there.” He crossed his arms as if that signaled the end of the conversation.

Obviously, a possible suspect leaving the country wasn’t a good deal, but wouldn’t he still have to pay if charged? Lola knew this wasn’t her area of expertise, but she did hear things. “Murder has no statute of limitations.”

“True.” Marcy agreed, then grimaced. “The problem is extradition. Ireland and the US have friendly enough relations, so it might be possible to extract a high-profile individual but not someone who changes his name, possibly even his appearance. For all we know, Makowski will have an Irish accent, too, or a backstory that has nothing to do with his current life.”

“This is assuming he’s guilty.” Jake sniffed, assuming a superior air as if he knew something they didn’t. “A man can emigrate if he wants to. Might be he wants to retire to someplace more restful.”

Marcy held up her hand with two fingers extended. “Two major issues with that theory. The first being his development of shell companies in Ireland. None bear his or his company’s name. Obviously, he intends to move some money through them. The second is someone told him that the case was being reopened.”

Oh, that was not good with only one person Lola could think of. “Mabel.”

“I suspect it was her, too.” Marcy beamed at Lola with approval.

Herman clapped his hands together two times. “Well then, if he moves it’s practically an admission of guilt.”

“Not quite.” Marcy shook her head. “We need something to connect him to the death. Once Lance got the call the case was a suicide, most of the evidence was dumped. Instinct had him snagging the notes and photos.”

They threw out suggestions. Herman, first.

“He wasn’t at his office at the time of his wife’s death.”

Marcy sucked in her lips before answering. “Not being where you said you were isn’t a crime. We have no eyewitnesses that he was or was not at the office. Then again, he didn’t need to produce any since it wasn’t deemed a homicide.”

“The man wasn’t cut up about his wife’s death.” Gus pointed out. “Married again as soon as possible.”

Jake fielded that question. “Men, especially older men, marry when a spouse dies since they are used to being taken care of.”

“Not buying it.” One of Marcy’s well-defined brows lifted. “That might be true for a man of modest means.
