Chapter 35

‘Shouldn’t you answer that?’ Sajid looked at Nikki as she glanced at her phone before silencing the call. They were back in his flat and Nikki was buzzing with developments so far.

‘It’s only bloody Anika. Don’t have time for her nonsense today.’

‘Might be important.’

Nikki snorted. ‘Yeah right. It’ll be summat and nowt – as usual. Probably wants me to head up to BRI to see Haqib. Like I’ve nowt else to do.’ Sometimes Nikki wanted nothing more than to shake her sister. Yes, Anika had her reasons for hating hospitals, for wanting to avoid them, but, hell, so did Nikki, yet you never saw her moaning and passing the buck. The thought that she was being a little unfair did cross her mind, but Nikki pushed it to the side. Today was the one day she had to let Anika cope on her own. She had to push forwards for Khal’s sake. She had to do what she should have done all that time ago. For once, Anika could just brace herself and go and take care of her own kid. For too long Nikki had cushioned her, made it easy for her sister to lean on her. Right now, though, Nikki needed her sister to step up to the mark and just get on with it. She needed her to be an adult for a change, not a dependent younger sibling.

‘Tell me what you got from Langley.’ Nikki knew that Saj hated having to consult with Langley at his workplace. He hated the thought that anyone might figure out that they were in a relationship. Truth was, most people knew about it already, but Nikki didn’t have the heart to tell him that. It was awkward being from a Muslim family and gay. Saj had once confided in her that he lived a double life. When he went back to Dewsbury, he was the traditional Muslim son, but here in Bradford, at least in his personal life, he could be himself. Langley, on occasion, was frustrated that Sajid wouldn’t be as open as he was about their relationship. Nikki got it though. Families had certain expectations, regardless of culture or religion, and if you fell outside their narrow parameters it could be hell for you – she knew that from personal experience because she was continually on the outside of her extended family’s expectations herself.

‘They found another three complete skeletons and are now confident there are no others in the car park. Seems like each body was deposited at a different time, which seems to coincide with building or gas and water works in the area. Rough dates are that one was buried in 2005 and another in 2008. The markings are consistent across all three bodies, the same slash marks right through to the bone. The identification process is almost complete. One was a white male student – ID’d from his student card as Martin Black. The other was a white woman who was visiting her friend and reported missing when she didn’t return to Newcastle in 2008.
