Five months earlier . . .

Dear Holly,

I lived on the coast for a while. I tried and failed to be a dancer.

K.

I sit and stare at the last message between us I sent weeks ago. I only sent it to make sure she’d stop looking into my dancing career. If I ever do find my way back to the spotlight, seeing her in the audience at one of my shows would send me toppling off stage.

But I haven’t heard back from her, and now I’m in a panic. I feel her eyes on me everywhere I go. I jump whenever my cell phone rings, and at night, I’m too afraid to sleep. I think I see her in the faces of strangers on the street; I hear her call out to me in a crowd, but when I turn, she’s not there.

My anxiety medication isn’t working. I can’t focus. I can’t concentrate.

Malcolm’s voice drives me to the brink of insanity. Always criticizing. Never supportive. Mikayla’s demands are becoming too much—I have no time alone. No time for myself.

My life is complicated right now, and the pressure keeps escalating. Soon it’ll reach a breaking point.

Even my own reflection terrifies me. I see my sister everywhere.

So, my body sags in relief when a new message from her appears a few weeks after the last one arrived.
