Gage tucked a blanket around Kody asleep on his basement pallet.

“It’s chillier down here,” he told Trent before checking Nash as well.

The four-year-old slept soundly under his homemade quilt, teddy

wrapped in one arm. “You wore them out this morning.”

“The wearing out was mutual, believe me.” Trent laughed but he

yawned and stretched, thinking he wouldn’t mind lying down for a nap

himself. Instead he followed Gage through the basement pantry to a door

set in the back wall. “Don’t you ever take a break?”

Looking puzzled, Gage paused to consider the question. “I ate

lunch.” He opened the door and led Trent inside.

Trent snorted. “You did eat lunch.” He gave up on convincing

Gage to take a break and reached for the light switch beside the door.

Gage’s hand closed over Trent’s before he could flip it on. “Gage, what?

Is something wrong?”

“Not wrong.” Gage hesitated. The only light showed through the

door of the pantry, leaving them in a deep shadow. Trent couldn’t see

Gage’s face at all, but the tone of his voice sounded odd. “It’s just…this

isn’t going as well as I hoped.”

“No?” No shit, Trent added to himself. One of them had to find

some control. Trent didn’t trust himself, and if he got within arm’s length

of Gage, the man found a reason to touch. Shoulder, arm, neck…so far

Trent had managed to back off and regroup. He didn’t know how many

more times he could resist the subtle brush of skin on skin.

“No, it’s not and I don’t understand why this is so damn hard. I

don’t have any trouble staying away from Cara.” Trent could only

imagine the look on Gage’s face as the silence stretched out between

them. “When you aren’t here all I can do is think about you, and now that

you are…I can’t stop touching you. And I want…I want.”

Gage’s hand tightened on Trent’s where it was still on the light

switch. If he squeezed any harder Trent thought he might end up with

matching sets of broken bones, but he didn’t pull away from the

somewhat painful grip. Gage’s waffling between what he thought was

right and what he wanted reminded Trent that Gage was young and

inexperienced. He obviously had no idea what to do with his attraction to

Trent.

“Gage, you’re gay. She’s not what you want.” Trent struggled to

find the words to help Gage understand himself better.

“I know, but it’s not like I hated it or anything. I mean, it wasn’t

amazing, but it felt pretty damn good.” A moment of silence and then

Gage spoke again, his voice little more than a whisper. “It’s not like I

know anything else, but I can stay away from her. Why can’t I stop

touching you?”

Trent’s heart clenched with sympathy, and other parts of his body

had their own reaction to Gage’s confession. He turned his hand and

tangled their fingers together. “Because I’m irresistible,” he teased in an

attempt to ease the tension between them.

Gage gave the requisite chuckle in response to Trent’s quip, but he

still sounded so distraught Trent had mercy on him.

“Maybe sex with her was okay, but you know she’s not attracted to

you any more than you are to her.
