“Gentlemen.” The words, “pigs” and “beasts” curled around Gwyneth’s cool tone, for she shared Kylie and Miranda’s opinion of the adult “Bachelor Club.” Her hazel eyes scathed Fletch’s dirtied, battered shirt, the holes in his grass-stained jeans, his too-long hair. She glared at the men’s smiles until they died and they sat quietly, hunkering uncomfortably now in their pasture dirt, sweat and bachelor status. Satisfied that she’d put them in their lowly places, she studied the expensive grill, the bratwursts and steaks, and glared at Tanner, her hands on her hips. “That’s quite the macho toy—can it fly? May I speak to you in private?”
“Certainly, my love. Steaks and burgers are ready, so go ahead and stuff yourselves,” Tanner said to his friends. He appreciated the long line of her legs and the fast sway of her hips as she preceded him into his boat building. He’d waited for her to come calling, to blast him for clearing away the tree limb that had crashed through her rooftop; an independent woman, she probably didn’t appreciate the repair of the roof, either.
She turned on him, panic filling her hazel eyes, and he wanted to hold her close, to cherish her all the more.
“I can’t do it.” Her rushed words bounced around the spacious cool building, the skeletal board form upon which a high-priced skiff would be born.
Tanner jammed his hands into his back pockets and watched her storm, tramping in front of his bed. He wanted her in it, under him. But he’d pushed a young girl last time and now he’d settled in for a long haul, taking his time. “Okay,” he agreed lightly. “Whatever you want.”
“Okay? Just okay? Forget about it?” She came up close to him, so close he could catch her scent beneath that of potter’s clay and hay and gasoline. She peered up at him. “You’re letting it drop, just like that? Good. Then you’ve realized how foolish this whole thing is.”
“Uh-huh. It’s up to you what happens. I knew you’d back out,” he said, watching the dim light catch in her hair like tiny sparks.
She frowned up at him, studying his expression. “I don’t trust you. You’re not an easy man now, Tanner. You’ve got too much locked up inside you. You kissed me. Hard and hot and hungry. Why?”
He shrugged, pushed away the knowing smile lurking at his mouth and watched her plow through her confusion. “I do not have a hope chest this time, either, Tanner, and you know it’s the custom for a woman to have a hope chest filled with pillowcases, tea towels and such. I don’t have time for embroidery, even if I knew how.”
“Fine with me.” He tried not to wince as Gwyneth’s fist grabbed his black T-shirt and a few hairs on his chest.
“Don’t start with me, Tanner Zachariah Bennett. I know that innocent look. I’ve known you all my life. We’d have to go through the steps, live together —live together.”
“Then we’d know, wouldn’t we?” he asked quietly.
