One her way back along the avenue to the hotel, Rachel passed a small shop selling toiletries, magazines and souvenirs. It was open. Catching a glint of metal in the window, she went in.

The jewellery was cheap, cased in clear plastic with a pink foam backing. There were some earrings and bracelets in dark silver sourced from a small mine in the east. They were oddly shaped, especially the earrings: a tight twist that looped at one end and finished in a flat point, like the tip of a sword, at the other.

In a small bin on the bottom shelf, under a rack of postcards featuring a puff of smoke at the base of a hill and the dark spire of the cathedral, were rings in egg-shaped canisters. They reminded Rachel of the machines that used to be in shopping centres, where you dropped in a coin and turned the key and a random one fell through the slot. She picked one up and looked through its domed lid. The band was slightly uneven and thick, more like a man’s ring than a woman’s, but it didn’t cost much and looked like it would fit.

Back in her room, she popped the top off the egg and tipped out the ring. The wedding bands she and Ben had chosen were gold, fairly slim, with words etched on the inside. Slipping the cheap silver over her ring finger sent a train of wistfulness charging through her. It’d been a long time; she no longer remembered what the inscriptions had said.

This ring was a size or two too big, but if she was careful, it wouldn’t slip off. She held her hand out to look. It would have to pass.
