Chapter Two

To her mother’s frustration, Laura did not so much as wait for a reply to the note she had written to Lady Havisham earlier that day, tying her bonnet carefully as her mother’s frantic words continued to fill her ears.

She had spent a restless night trying to push the memory of what she had seen and heard from her mind but had found herself quite unable to do so. To say that she was scared was an understatement, for she was suddenly terrified that the gentleman who had opened the drapes might, after all, be able to discover who she was and could easily come after her. No matter how many times she reminded herself that he had been the one injured by the first gentleman, she could not rid herself of the fear that now clutched at her heart.

Aside from telling Lady Havisham what she had seen and heard, Laura had very little idea of what she would do next. There was the frightening thought that, mayhap, her days in London were now sorely numbered, for she might have to return home sooner than she had expected if her reputation—or her life—were in danger. But then she tried to tell herself that she was being overly dramatic and entirely insensible, forcing herself to be as resolute as she had been last evening.

“You cannot simply go to Lady Havisham’s home without an invitation!” her mother exclaimed, as Laura pulled on her gloves. “Laura, it is rudeness itself!”

“Mama,” Laura replied, placing a warm smile on her face, “Lady Havisham has invited me, as her most particular friend, to call whenever I wish!”

The despair on her mother’s face melted away almost at once as she looked at Laura in astonishment, who nodded again, keeping her smile fixed in place.

“Is this true?” Lady Reapsome asked, with a small frown flickering across her brow. “You were only introduced yesterday evening.”

“And we realized that we are very much alike, Mama,” Laura explained, the lies rolling off her tongue with ease. “You ought to be very glad at such a development, Mama, for she has already introduced me to some very eligible gentlemen and has promised to do so again, should I wish it.” Seeing her mother now beaming with delight, Laura pressed her hand gently. “Now, I had best go, Mama. Do not expect me back for a few hours, for I am quite sure Lady Havisham and I will have a good deal to talk about.”

Lady Reapsome, now all smiles, nodded and encouraged Laura out of the door. “But of course, my dear. Do enjoy yourself now. Have you a maid?”

“Yes, of course,” Laura replied, smiling. “She is already in the carriage. Do excuse me, Mama.”
