CHAPTER TEN
Where’s Ahmed?
The rancid stinging smell of death whisked up Hector’s nose, causing his eyes to water momentarily as he walked over the devastation that remained of his motorcade designed to protect Ahmed Basara. The strangling heat and humidity made Hector’s anger quickly transform to rage and he suddenly felt the insatiable need to kill something. As Hector and forty other soldiers of his cartel walked over the burning metal and bodies, each of them looked at each other in disbelief as the handful of trackers ahead of them gave details of how many assailants bombarded this heavily armed convoy. One…just one man caused all the devastation that sprawled around this jungle road infested with flies and flesh eating birds, and insects.
“Are you sure?” Hector yelled at the trackers ahead of him.
“Si, Rey Hector. Un Hombre.” (One man)
Impossible, Hector thought as he gritted his teeth. “Who could do such a thing against thirty men, Hector asked while stepping over another body.
One of the trackers turned to face Hector and replied, “So far, Rey Hector, there isn’t anyone in all of Mexico or South America capable of this. This was the work of an extranjero. I would say CIA, but I doubt they have anyone this skilled. This is someone new, someone very dangerous and efficient. He covered his tracks to perfection and there’s no way we can track him beyond the convoy. Sorry, Rey Hector.”
Shaking his head while looking down at the ground, Hector forced a smile as he placed his hand on the tracker’s shoulder, attempting to reassure him that his failure was acceptable. But in the back of his mind, Hector wanted to place a bullet down the tracker’s throat, but he knew he needed every man he had in the coming days. The Escorpiones cartel was getting bolder each day, and with the Federales increasing their presence near his compound, Hector knew it was only a matter of time before he would have to fight enemies on two fronts. Hector suddenly began to squeeze the tracker’s shoulder with so much force, the tracker’s right knee gave way and he grimaced in pain as his body leaned to the right, as he considered just how much trouble he was in.
“I understand, good job, but we need to find Ahmed. He’s the reason for all of this and if we lose him, all of our brothers would’ve died for nothing. So, let’s find him and this fucker that killed our brothers and get our revenge! “Compañeros de armas!” (brothers in arms) Hector yelled, while giving his men the cartel’s salute. The quick and dynamic gesture seemed to rally his men into action and they all started moving in every direction, attempting to find any signs of Ahmed and his captor.
Hector stood next to the jeep Ahmed was riding in while watching his men rush into the surrounding jungle. He knew none of them would find what they were looking for, because he already knew who was responsible for this mayhem.
