CHAPTER 15

Athens, Greece

Fathi Jabara and Maximiliénne Sauváge, each carrying a small backpack so they wouldn’t be hassled by the airline ticket attendants and end up having to repack their wares in order to meet the seventeen-pound carryon-luggage requirement as they had to during their reconnaissance last year, boarded an Aegean Airlines flight scheduled to fly from Athens to Santorini.

Once they landed in Santorini, they traveled thirty minutes by car from the airport to the ancient ruins of Akrotiri. They stopped and parked on the side of the road and walked to the entrance. The visit was a charade to throw off any tail that might be following them. Although they were very careful with their travel plans, there was always the possibility that someone was watching.

They paid the entrance fee and entered the archeological site. The enclosure protected the excavating students and professors as they slowly picked apart the ancient city to reveal its secrets.

Jabara and Maximiliénne walked slowly along the ramps and pathways, stopping periodically to take photos. Maximiliénne pointed to the stone stairs that had been cracked and caved in from the earthquake and volcanic explosion that destroyed Thira and obliterated the island, leaving just the outer rim—the caldera.

Miraculously, the inhabitants of Akrotiri had enough warning to gather their most important possessions and leave before the ash from the volcano covered them in a blanket of death as had happened in Pompeii when Vesuvius erupted.

After spending a little over an hour exploring the ruins, Jabara and Maximiliénne left and drove to Mesa Pigadia. From there, they boarded a boat owned by the Taliban and sped around the western point of Santorini and then northeast to a southeastern cove on the island of Nea Kameni.

Jabara guided their craft to slowly float into the inlet and anchored it above two sunken ships. “Put on your scuba equipment,” Jabara said.

They eased themselves into the water and dove down to the deck of the larger boat. They opened the hatch and dropped down to the galley. Once there, they swam to the aft of the vessel. Jabara pulled down a lever on the wall and waited for the red light to turn green. He then opened what looked like an overhead, garage door. They walked through and Jabara closed it behind them and twisted a handle on the wall. The water began to recede. When it was at his chest, he took off his goggles and pulled out his mouthpiece. Maximiliénne did the same.

As soon as the water was gone, they stepped out of their wetsuits and took off their flippers. They opened their waterproof backpacks and donned fresh shoes. Jabara pressed a button on the far wall and a door swung open, releasing a hissing sound.

They entered a dimly-lit tunnel and began walking down a dirt pathway. The door closed behind them and sealed. They carried their scuba gear until they reached an electric car that sat on rails. They got in, placed the gear behind them, and Jabara punched in a code on the keyboard.
