Chapter 6

Demi: Overworked and Hurt

After we made love, I looked into Knox’s eyes. He seemed happier, and I was glad about that. I was worried he would act differently after all that happened.

But there was also something else there: fear of my leaving. However, I took his hand, squeezing it and looking at him.

“Don’t worry, I won’t leave you behind,” I said.

We were both two people worried about whether or not the other would leave. In a strange way, I kind of felt for him.

But, of course, I also wondered if I could get over my feelings of being hurt, too.

As I continued to work, I learned more and more about my boss. Not just about the hit, but that he’d been meeting with people on the side from the Devils. I learned he’d been taking their calls during work hours. I’d see him texting during our weekly meetings, and it left me sick and disgusted.

I wanted to do something about it. But every time I did step forward, about to tell him to knock it off, I would stop myself.

I couldn’t do it. I was scared of what would happen to me.

It seemed like Monk was doing better, too. Although it’d only been a few days, he seemed much happier than before, which I was relieved to see.

But there was something about the situation, something that bothered me, and it made me upset.

However, I kept quiet. Knox did visit from time to time, but the conversations were lacking in some ways. It was like both of us were afraid to express ourselves.

“Something the matter?” he asked me one day.

I looked into his eyes, determined to keep my feelings to myself, but I knew I couldn’t do that forever.

“Demi, what’s going on?” Knox asked.

Should I tell him? I wondered what he’d think. Finally, I sighed.

“It’s nothing, Knox. Nothing to worry about,” I said.

“Bullshit. You’re clearly upset about something. Please, just tell me,” he said.

Why should I? Why did he want to hurt me like this again? I felt lost, torn, and unsure.

“I don’t know, Knox. I’m just … struggling,” I told him.

“Come on. I can see it in your eyes, Demi. You’re overworked. You looked fine at first, but I see it. It’s not been easy for you,” he said.

It hasn’t. But I wasn’t ready to come forward about it.

“I’m fine, just a little overworked. I’ve been—”

“Demi, I know why you’re overworked. You’ve been working twelve-hour shifts. I also know you’ve been doing something. So tell me. Please,” Knox insisted.

I looked at him, seeing the serious look in his eyes. He seemed to mean it. I felt … bad for not saying anything sooner.

“I learned about my boss. The one I told you about who planted the bomb. He’s been working with the Devils. I found this information in a couple of files on his computer, but also directly from him as well. I just feel kind of shitty, Knox. I don’t know what to do,” I said.

“I know. But if you want to, you could continue to follow him.
