32 - Tom Langford
I drive home, proud of my accomplishments over the last twenty-four hours. The sheer panic Cooper feels must be eating at him and wearing down his confidence, drive, and commitment to bringing me down. Iâm almost confident that the next episode he uploads will be him admitting defeat and shutting down the podcast; then, I can go back to my life of solitude.
I fantasize about the peaceful life I once had. There was no running from the police or the FBI, and there was no looking over my shoulder everywhere I went. Everything had fallen into place. I had gotten away with my crimes. Crimes. I know theyâre crimes, and I shouldnât be this proud of getting away with it. Twenty-three murders, and they found nothing but a single strand of hair that matched with nothing.
That was the only slip up I made, and it was relatively unavoidable, not truly my fault. Iâd always taken the proper precautions. I take a left on Berlin Street, almost home. This whole time Iâve only been about three blocks away from Cooperâs house. Iâve passed him on the street a million times, Iâm sure, and he has no idea who I am. A smile flashes across my face as that powerful feeling of being invisible comes to mind again.
Iâm about to pull into my driveway when I look down the road. I spot the pink Volkswagen Beetle again. What the hell? I think. Itâs only four houses down, so I sharply pull into my driveway, the brakes grinding to a halt. I get out of the car and stare down the road for a moment, knowing I need to investigate. I still have the gloves on, so I grab a knife and a ski mask, sliding it quickly over my head as I run across the street.
I cut through the few yards that stand between myself and the vehicle. As I enter the yard of the house it is parked in front of, I drop lower to the ground. I canât be spotted now. Iâve come too far. I strain my eyes, attempting to see the occupants inside the car. Thatâs when I spot him.
Cooper. Fucking. Cobb.
I canât reasonably determine who the second person is in the car. I can see long hair in the passenger seat, but thatâs about it. I slowly take significant, deliberate steps across the yard so I donât alert them. I can now see into the passenger seat and spot Tatum from the coffee shop. I canât believe my eyes. They look like theyâre just wrapping up a date.
My eyes dart up to the house, which stands out against the darkness. A single porch light is on in the front. I know what I must do now, but how do I go undetected? I slowly back away from the car, and it doesnât look like they even have a clue that I am there.
I run around the darker side of the home and spot a terrace running the height of the house to the upstairs.
