Chapter Ten

Dressed to Thrill

IT WAS bright and sunny that Friday morning, and Sam was in the Knob lane, hurrying from breakfast to his first class at Jenkins Hall. So far he’d been able to keep down a scrambled egg, a piece of dry toast, and a little coffee, and considering how violently ill he’d been the night before, he felt pretty good about that.

His first class was one he shared with Gus, and he didn’t know if the slight queasiness in his stomach was left over from the night before or because he was a little nervous, anticipating his and Gus’s first encounter since last night. Sam had never felt butterflies in his stomach over any guy before, so he was almost certain it was just a weak stomach.

Approaching the doorway hesitantly, Sam saw Gus in his usual seat at the back of the classroom, looking through his textbook. Gus immediately glanced up as if he felt Sam’s presence. Their eyes locked, and Gus flashed a smile that lit up the entire classroom. Sam normally sat across the room, but today his legs carried him right to the seat next to Gus.

“Hey,” Gus said. “How’re you feeling?”

“Pretty good. Considering,” Sam said, taking his seat. He leaned in a little. “Thanks again for being there.”

Gus smiled once more, and those dimples were front and center. “Happy to do it. I’m just glad you weren’t alone. It sucks to be alone and sick, especially when you’re away from home.”

“Thanks to you I didn’t have to be alone,” Sam replied coquettishly. Jesus, Sam! Stop this mushy talk. You sound like a girl. “But I guess this is our home. For now, anyway,” he added. There! That was okay.

“Good point,” Gus said. “Hey, speaking of home. About tonight.”

Sam felt a quick tinge of something that felt a little like disappointment. Is he gonna retract his offer? “What about tonight?” he said hesitantly, sitting up in his chair, his curiosity now piqued.

“I’m not sure how to say this so it doesn’t sound as horrible as it is, but just remember we don’t get to pick our parents.”

“I know that,” Sam said.

“Okay, well…. My parents,” Gus said. “Well. Let’s just say they are everything you thought you hated about me and my privileged upbringing.”

Sam looked away quickly. Ouch! That stung a little, but he figured he deserved it. He would let Gus have this one. But he didn’t really know how to respond. After he’d been such an ass to Gus, he hadn’t given any more thought to the whole wealth and privilege thing. But now, tonight, he was going to have to face it head-on by meeting Gus’s family.

Gus must have picked up on Sam’s hesitancy. He reached over and put his hand on Sam’s forearm. “Please don’t back out,” he said. “I promise I’ll protect you. And… I’ll make sure they behave themselves.”

The guy looked pitiful, and Sam couldn’t disappoint him. “I can take care of myself,” he said. “I’m from Detroit. Remember?”

Gus’s entire face lit up again as he flashed that million-dollar smile.
