Chapter Thirteen

"So, what are they like?" Cyn asked me the next day while we spent our free study period together in the library before lunch.

I pulled out my welcome pack, determined not to make the same mistake again and fall afoul of school rules.

"What are who like?" I asked though I knew exactly who she was talking about.

I'd made the mistake of mentioning Lachlan and his crew to her as we were getting ready that morning. I hadn’t thought she was paying attention. She'd been too busy rolling my skirt up so my underwear was practically on display and telling me how hot she thought I was. I'd protested, but she'd insisted I wouldn’t survive in a place like this if I even thought about having my skirt at the required knee length.

She, on the other hand, was wearing hers to almost her ankles and had teamed it with a baggy top. She was the picture of frumpy perfection, just as she liked it. She really was an enigma. Sex kitten one minute, potato sack princess the next.

I liked her both ways and was just happy to have her around, regardless. Jason had outright ghosted me at breakfast because of my stunt the night before, and I pretty much hated everyone else in this place.

"They sound hot."

"Hmmm," I replied, not wanting to admit just how much I agreed with her. I opened my welcome pack to the page with the school rules. Jason was right. The very first one was about not crossing the walkway once the tide was in. It even came complete with a little silhouette graphic of a person drowning. Great. I felt even more stupid now, staring at the little drowning man. That could have easily been me, and all because I was too chicken shit to admit I was wrong and ask for help.

Scanning the page, I could see that the tunnel was actually mentioned in the rules so it was hardly the big secret I'd thought it was.

"You have a crush on one of them,” Cyn laughed, snatching the booklet from me. “I can tell. You have that doe-eyed look about you.”

“Do not!” Snatching the booklet back, I rolled it up and smacked her hand with it.

She was partially right. I didn’t have a crush on one of them. If anything, I’d have a crush on all four. Not that I was crushing, or anything. But holy shit, even just picturing the four of them standing at the front of the detention room together made my muscles clench in all the right place.

Or, wrong places, considering who and what they are. Asshole through and through, and I wasn’t about to let that slide for the sake of their good looks.

Cyn was beaming at me from across the table. For the first time, I noticed her teeth had braces on them. Had she been wearing them before? I didn't think so, but I couldn't remember. She must have been. It was hardly as though an orthodontist had visited us in the night and yet I could have sworn I'd not seen them before.
