Chapter Nine

Whitebridge Hill Road, Winnetka, Chicago...

“INTERESTING ISN’T IT, THAT YOU’LL BE living on your father-in-law’s doorstep?” Leo quipped as Ice drove the black GMC SUV toward the impressive three-story mansion at Lake Michigan’s edge.

“Yeah, I hadn’t bargained on that,” Vito muttered as he looked around. He passed the property every day on his way to work from his own house a couple of miles further up on Longwood Avenue.

“If she’s telling the truth and he kicked her out, it wouldn’t matter either way,” Ice interjected. “Nothing as exhilarating as breaking away from a controlling father.”

“A thing some of us have personal knowledge of,” Vito said in a dark voice. The car rolled to a stop. He got out and smiled at his two co-conspirators. “Keep your weapons concealed, please. This is a cordial visit to inform my future father-in-law that he has a wedding to arrange and pay for.”

The two men guffawed. “I can already imagine how that’s going to go off,” Leo snickered. “We’ll behave unless Alejandro’s bodyguards become antsy.”

“You seem very confident that he’s going to agree to your demands.” Ice eyed him as they walked up the short flight of steps to the front porch. “Whatever he had alluded to before, what are the chances he actually has proof that you’re the Boss of the Mafia?”

“You can’t get to be a kingpin of a major drug cartel without knowing who the competition is. He knew my father. I’ve been present during numerous conferences between the drug cartels and the Mafia. The FBI might’ve been fooled that I had stepped away from the family business. But Pérez? Always miles ahead of the enemy.”

“Still doesn’t mean he has any proof to provide the authorities, especially not without exposing himself,” Leo said as he depressed a black circular button fixed to a reinforced concrete door jamb. He was not surprised that within seconds of the chimes fading to a soft echo, he was looking into the weathered face of a seasoned professional.

“How may I help you?” The upper lip of the manservant twitched as he quickly took stock of the three powerful-looking strangers.

“Mr. Vito Vitale would like to speak with Mr. Pérez,” Ice said in his thick Russian patois. The wiry man shrunk even more in the face of the ice-blue gaze as he stepped inside the house followed by Leo and Vito.

“I don’t recall that Mr. Vitale had a meeting scheduled. Mr. Pérez is a very busy man,” he asserted. It was the sharp tug on his pristine blazer that put paid to the brief display of officiousness.

“I’m sure he will make time for me.” Vito leaned forward with narrowed eyes. “And I don’t appreciate my time being wasted, so I suggest you ... ah, it seems he got the message,” he chuckled as the butler spun around and scurried down the hallway.

“Please wait there. I’ll be right back.”

“Did the two of you really have to be such dicks? The man was only doing his job.” Leo had a soft spot for hard working people.
