Chapter Eleven
Luke watched the ambulance carrying the boy and Georgie disappear down the lane, and kept watching until the wail of the sirens faded in the distance.
“We’ll go to the hospital later, Georgie promised to keep us updated.” I nudged his arm to get his attention, and held up his jumper and jacket, which we’d added to the layers bundled around the boy. Luke was wearing only jeans and a T-shirt, and I could see goose bumps on the flesh of his arms. I knew he wasn’t even wearing any socks under his boots, because the kid had still been wearing them when the paramedics wrapped him in one of those silver thermal blankets. “Come on, put these on before we need to call another ambulance for you.”
“His heartbeat felt a little stronger there, don’t you think?” he asked, pulling the thick, cable knit jumper over his head and reaching for his jacket. “I think I saw his eyelids flutter, did you see that?”
I didn’t, but I nodded as I reached up to smooth down his ruffled hair. “You probably saved his life, love.”
The lines in his forehead deepened. “I should never have left him here when I got out. I should have tried to find him.”
“Hey, no.” I grabbed the front of his jacket. “Don’t do that, please. If you’d stayed to try to find him you might not be here now, and I-I can’t tell you how much I don’t like that idea. The boy is safe now. He’s going to be all right, and that’s because of you.” Please, God, let him be all right.
Luke’s eyes closed and he tipped his head forwards to touch our foreheads together. “We’ll go and see him later,” he said, and I couldn’t tell if it was a question or a statement, so I just nodded.
“Everything okay, guys?” Ken asked softly.
“Yeah, we’re good, right, Luke?” I leant back and fastened the buttons down the front of his wool jacket.
He glanced in the direction of the lane again, then smiled, a touch strained. “Right. What do you need me to do, Ken?”
We spent the next four hours following Ken and his team around the property, shadowed by masked forensics officers who scowled when it looked like we might touch something before them. It felt like we turned over every rock and leaf, poked around every centimetre of the crumbling out buildings, even the old chimneys and toilets were thoroughly checked out. That was one job I was thrilled not to have to perform.
As the tagged evidence bags mounted up, I could feel Luke’s frustration levels rising. He had no memory of anything but the room in which he’d been held, and the fading bumblebee sign. There were indications that others had been held in the old stable block. Pieces of clothing, more blood stains, the stench of human waste and, most horrifying, chains and manacles bolted to the walls. If Luke had ever been in that place, then I would be eternally grateful to any deity listening if he never remembered.
